About this listen

After his wife and two children are killed in a car crash, Ryan Tapia starts a new life in Maine. But his first case there is a puzzling oddball—the corpse of a fisherman washes up on federal land, while the man's boat drifts into waters that are part of an Indian reservation. Ryan quickly learns the nuances of Maine life as he delves into two illicit coastal trades: hard drugs and rare fish. Many of the locals are happy to see that particular fisherman dead. What's more, they are not shy about noting that Ryan must have screwed up pretty badly to be posted to such a remote location as Bangor, Maine.

Undaunted, Ryan works to understand the unforgiving way of life on Liberty Island, where people live by an older, harsher code. Adrift on a sailboat one day, he encounters a man from the Malpense tribe, living as a hermit on a remote island, who witnessed something that fateful day.

In his riveting crime debut, New York Times bestselling author Thomas E. Ricks turns his literary talents to land he knows deeply, from working in the Maine woods and trapping lobsters year-round. Everyone Knows But You is a rich and dynamic crime novel that brings a unique part of America to vivid, thrilling life.

Masterfully Written

I am a huge fan of this author’s non-fiction, and know him to be a gifted writer. I was excited to read this new work of fiction, and in particular with the inclusion of Maine as a “character” in the story. The detail, and visuals he paints are transporting. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more fiction from him - hopefully soon! Finally, the narration was terrific too!

Sense Of Place

This story kept me entertained and interested because the main character was healing as he worked. The research into Maine was A+.

Wantvto know a Mainer?

A cultural ride with Maine trap fishermen as much of a part of the story as the murder mystery.

Atmospheric, characters and descriptions

Very adroit novel by a well respected journalist. Said he wrote it for fun. Well done, sir! A very enjoyable read, hope he writes more!

Lack of pretension

A charming education in rural Maine and its natives. The story, leisurely and without much of the suspense and action of the usual mystery novel, is more concerned with character and location.

Fascinating portrait of rural island Maine

I thought I knew something about Maine, but this was a revelation. Well written, in concise no nonsense language that mirrors the character of the people described. Quirky, sometimes funny, wonderfully narrated by Graham Rowat, the themes of this brand of justice will bear pondering for some time. Looking forward to the next entry in the series, if that’s what it is!

Stereotypes

As a 40-year resident of Maine, I was offended by the use of all the clichés about the state and its people. The novel read like a first book by the author. Very disappointed. The reader sounded like he was parodying Mainers and the state.
