About this listen

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before

The audiobook of Equal Rites is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones; Luther; This Way Up). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.'

Everybody knows there's no such thing as a female wizard. So when the wizard Drum Billet accidentally passes on his staff of power to an eighth daughter of an eighth son, a girl called Eskarina (Esk, for short), the misogynistic world of wizardry wants nothing to do with her.

Thankfully Granny Weatherwax, the Discworld's most famous witch, has plenty of experience ignoring the status quo. With Granny's help, Esk sneaks her way into the magical Unseen University and befriends apprentice wizard Simon.

But power is unpredictable, and these bright young students soon find themselves in a whole new dimension of trouble. Let the battle of the sexes begin...

'If you've never read a Discworld novel, what's the matter with you?' Guardian

'Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own' The Times

Equal Rites is the first book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series -
The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Equal Rites -Of course I have to check out a new..

As a long long long time fan of Sir Terry Pratchett, I have listened to all previous performers, Nigel Planer and Stephen Briggs being my all time favorites and to fill those shoes.. nigh impossible..

Indira Warma is above and beyond! Her beautiful voice, crisp and clear, masters the storytelling, she has a very distinguished voice for all of the characters, delivers the dry wit of Sir Terry Pratchett to a T and is just.. perfect!

For Bill Nighy and Peter Serafinowicz I have to wait to comment on, they only "appear" once or twice and not enough for me to say anything other than.. I miss Master's Planer and Briggs footnotes and DEATH..

Wonderful story to enjoy while hiking

Loved the narration! I’ll be getting the rest of the audio books for my jaunts. I scared off a few woodland creatures on my walks while laughing at the antics of Granny Weatherwax. Also, I’m looking forward to the release of audiobooks that include Sam Vimes, the Night Watch, and Vetinari. Such as Night Watch, Men at Arms, Sourcery, and Guards! Guards!.

A new voice for the witches

The narrator does an amazing job bringing a fresh voice to the brilliant series of the witches from the Disc World novels by Terry Pratchett.

Delightful

I've enjoyed many of Terry Pratchett's discworld novels in the past, but took the opportunity with this new audio series to finally read the Witches series.

Entertaining, funny and surprisingly thought provoking. A must read for fans, and a great place to start if you're unfamiliar with Discworld! Then you'll be a fan and have to read all the others as well.

One of the best books of Terry Pratchett

One of the best books of Terry Pratchett, the story is fascinating, jokes are top notch. The only issue, there is no continuation of the story. Really curious what happened to Esk later

One of my favorite Peatchett books

You can’t go wrong with any of these. The new recording improved greatly the sound quality from the older recording. Great story, great narration.
