About this listen

Charming, rich, and clever, heiress Emma Woodhouse has no need for an occupation - or a husband. Still, she considers herself quite skilled at matchmaking. Although her dear friend Mr. Knightley advises against it, there is nothing that she enjoys more than entangling herself in the romantic lives of others. But when one of her well-intentioned plans goes awry - as Mr. Knightley rightly predicted - Emma must face the consequences of her meddling.

The delightfully imperfect Emma and her Mr. Knightley have captured the hearts of generations of readers. A lively comedy of manners that has been adapted several times for the screen, Emma is the last work Jane Austen lived to see published.

Great Story, Perfect Narrator

You might think it's strange to have a man narrating this book, but Mr. Page does such an excellent job on the women I sometimes forget it's a man's voice I'm hearing. Also, being a man, he avoids the shrill quality some of Austen's sillier characters sometimes get with female narrators. Page's voice is so smooth even the harsher dialog is pleasant to listen too. Each of the characters has a distinct voice and quality which actually enhances the author's splendid characterization.

I like to have a book going in my ear all night long, but that only works with a book you already know. I have chosen this one lately because no matter where I wake up, I enjoy listening to it for a bit while I drift back to sleep. Of course I have already heard the whole thing in an awake state earlier!

Thank you Amazon for making this audio book available and also Persuasion, which I plan to use as my bedtime book if I ever get tired of this one.

Wonderful classic - wonderful narration

"Emma" is perhaps Jane Austen's most delicious romantic comedy, built around the match-making attempts of Miss Woodhouse, and the mangled relationships and social disasters that ensue. Although Emma means well, she ignores the advice of her good older friend Mr. Knightley to leave well enough alone, begining with her attempts to raise up the social status of her friend Harriet Smith. In the end, amid the ruins of her plans, Emma may face some difficult choices, and a fateful but priceless conversation with Mr. Knighley about her future.

The comedy ripples through every chapter. Austen's supporting cast is well-chosen and well-written; this is a fun novel, and much more than a comedy of manners.

A great narration - highly enjoyable !
