"El acertijo de la vida" es una fascinante narración de los hallazgos más importantes de la Biología durante el siglo XX y su revolución para dar paso a la genética. Para ello da cuenta de los actores más importantes en este proceso y el contexto en el que se dieron sus aportaciones: la importancia que tuvo Rosalind Franklin en el desarrollo del esquema de la doble hélice del ADN, las primeras ideas en la biología relacionadas a la búsqueda del gen y que dieron paso a la genética, el descubrimiento del ADN, el cambio de mentalidad en los biólogos que estudiaban los genes, quienes pasaron de percibir a éstos como unidades químicas a unidades de información (ello debido a un contexto histórico marcado por el descubrimiento de la energía atómica y el nacimiento de la computación); el descubrimiento de las bases nitrogenadas en el ADN, del ARN y de la doble hélice en el ADN, las primeras investigaciones que se ocupaban de la descodificación del código genético, la encarnizada lucha científica desde diversos laboratorios alrededor del mundo para descubrir el código en codones de cada una de las proteínas en los seres vivos, la cual culminó con un premio nobel compartido entre tres científicos. El libro cierra con un interesante capítulo final en que se plantean nuevas interrogantes sobre el origen de la vida y algunas teorías acerca de la finalidad de los genes.
