About this listen

Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor", a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

Featured Article: For Women Thinking About Stopping Drinking, ‘Quit Lit’ Can Help

The growing genre of "Quit Lit" runneth over with audiobooks, memoirs, and podcasts specifically for women—and whether you’re detoxing for Dry January, moderating, or trying to quit for good, they could be exactly what you need to hear.

I tried to read this book when I first got sober but had difficulty getting through it. Finally, 5 years into sobriety, I finished this book. It is very triggering and at times while I was listening to it, I craved that sexy glass of wine. That's how the alcoholic thinks! When I was drinking, I had very similar experiences, just as I know many alcoholics have had. It's not easy for most people to understand unless they have been there. I am grateful to be sober today and grateful to have stories recounted that remind me of what it used to be like!

Excellent recount of what it was like, what happened, and what it's like now

My name's Glen and I'm an alcoholic. Weird. But undeniable in this moment. I've never felt so much empathy in a book. There is just so much to identify with here. The visual of the haze of alcoholism taking time to burn off... stunning. Really would have loved to spend an hour with Ms. Knapp.

The prose is delicious, soft-bodied. Ms. Zackman's captures the spirit of the author's writing perfectly too, letting those bursts of insight really make the ear tingle.

Still in awe to be honest.

I listened to it all in awe

I enjoyed this book. It reads more like a personal story of a person's love for alcohol as opposed to a lecture on why booze isnt good for you. Don't expect any light bulb moments. it's like a very long goodbye or "Dear John" letter to alcohol by the author.

Intriguing read

Not being type A personality, I wasn’t sure if I could relate to her story. By chapter 5 I was hooked. Beautiful description to describe the struggle that so many face. I highly recommend this book to anyone that might even slightly be struggling with their relationship with alcohol. Thank you for sharing your story.
