About this listen

Stuck with her off-limits, taciturn, hunky movie star client during a sudden snowstorm on Christmas Eve, an extremely capable and highly professional bodyguard must keep him alive and warm without letting the tension building between them get too hot.

Bathsheba (Beth) Ryan can’t thank her best friend enough for helping her land the job of her dreams. After being relegated to second-string security for politicians in DC, being hired as an undercover personal security specialist by a giant Hollywood studio is exactly the kind of action she's always wanted.

Until she meets her first assignment.

Cyrus Malcom can’t thank his agent enough for arranging a blind date with seemingly the woman of his dreams. After spending the past several years playing all the parts and climbing all the ladders, the lonely mega movie star finds himself actually enjoying a night on the town for the first time in ages when he meets the gorgeous, funny, and genuine Ryaine O’Rourke.

Until she shows up at his studio meeting the next day with a completely different name.

A world-wide press tour and too many late-night parties later, Beth simply needs to get through a short, one-day visit during the Christmas holiday, and then she’ll be free of Cyrus Malcom’s confusing hot looks and cold shoulders for good.

But just as they leave the airport, it starts to snow....

Drama King is the second book in the Three Kings Series, is a full-length, contemporary romantic comedy, and can be listened to as a complete standalone.

Boooo

A disappointment after reading the first in the series. The first one was great! This one not so much.

I would marry Penny Reid

I would marry Penny Reid. If I knew her. And we were both lesbians. That's how much I love her writing.

The review:
Okay, Drama King is not as good as Homecoming King (which was perfect,) but it was a good follow up, and if she writes a third, I will buy it and listen. In fact, I will buy every Penny Reid book and listen/read them all at least once.

It's her writing that is brilliant. Her heroines inner monologues are better than any I have ever read. They are funny, quippy, self deprecating, and endearing. And she doesn't just love knitting, she's a crafter too. You can tell. (Thank you Penny, for giving obsessive crafters validity and voice.)

The best part of Drama King is the long, LONG, drawn out, angsty, sometimes painful journey her characters have to take to finally unite. I have found that this is true of all the PR books I have read/listened to. You have to be a patient listener. Luckily, she makes the journey VERY entertaining.

Joy Nash's narrating was wonderful in both books. Her acting is impeccable.

Not my favorite

I love all of PR’s books. The Knitting in the City series and the Winston Brothers Series are like old friends I revisit. This one however was just ok. The characters seemed odd and forgettable, and the story was so slow and dragged on.

Love Penny Reid but miss Chris Brinkley

To be I honest, I think this book would have been better with Joy Nash narrating alone. She kills it narrating male roles. If you’re going to add a guy, he automatically is going to get compared to Chris Brinkley, and this guy falls short. I really hate to say that. I have listened to so many Penny Reid books though that I felt the need to review this one. I’m not hating it. I just found Joy Nash’s version of Cyrus in book one of this series to be way more appealing. I feel like

Favorite book in the 12 months

All of Penny Reid’s books are great, but this one, this one might be my favorite. (Followed by Beauty and the Mustache).

The MMC is my perfect book boyfriend. And how the FMC sees him is so much different than what’s going on in his head. He’s funny and charming and sweet and kind and awesome. But also a little messed up. In a hilarious way.

If the male narrator doesn’t get nominated for every performance award, it’ll be a supreme injustice. Maybe I’ll start a write-in campaign immediately. I love Penny Reid’s other male narrators, especially Chris Brinkley, and her female narrators are always great, but this guy was outstanding. A damn joy to listen to. I stopped for a day when there were only two hours left becauseI didn’t want it end. Story-wise and performance-wise.

BTW, the story was wonderful.

Please, Penny Reid, please I beg of you, give these two another story. It could be their wedding, or Christmas, or vacationing in Tennessee while visiting other movie stars. Anything! I can’t let them go yet!

Do yourself a favor, read or listen to Drama King, then read all of Penny Reid’s other books. You’ll thank me.

Love PR but this was a miss

The first in the series was awesome but this second book had zero chemistry between the characters and they had no charm as individuals. Made it hard to care about them getting together. Maybe it would’ve been more enjoyable if Joy Nash read it alone.

Loved this story

Joy was fabulous as always and the story of Beth and Cyrus did not disappoint. Male voice was not my favorite but it is still totally with the wait for book2. Can’t wait for book 3.

Penny Reid has done better

Never really got into this story or the characters. Joy Nash was great, but I missed Chris Brinkley. A lot. Wonder if that played into not liking the story. Enjoyed the preview of Truth or Beard more than this book and I’ve already listened to that one in its entirety. I missed the typical Penny Reid quirky humor.
