Acerca de esta escucha

From the author of the New York Times bestselling The Testing trilogy comes a sweeping new fantasy series, perfect for fans of Victoria Aveyard and Sarah J. Maas.

Twins Carys and Andreus were never destined to rule Eden. With their older brother next in line to inherit the throne, the future of the kingdom was secure.

But appearances—and rivals—can be deceiving. When Eden’s king and crown prince are killed by assassins, Eden desperately needs a monarch, but the line of succession is no longer clear. With a ruling council scheming to gain power, Carys and Andreus are faced with only one option—to take part in a Trial of Succession that will determine which one of them is worthy of ruling the kingdom.

As sister and brother, Carys and Andreus have always kept each other safe—from their secrets, from the court, and from the monsters lurking in the mountains beyond the kingdom’s wall. But the Trial of Succession will test the bonds of trust and family.

With their country and their hearts divided, Carys and Andreus will discover exactly what each will do to win the crown. How long before suspicion takes hold and the thirst for power leads to the ultimate betrayal?

This story about twins was different than I expected. No spoilers, but I was disappointed with the direction it took in their interactions with each other during the trials. Also, when the book was clearly wrapping up I exclaimed, "It's over?! Barely anything happened!" True, they went through a lot in a short amount of time, but I think the author didn't get me to believe it all or feel like I'd gone through it too. We jumped into a story already going on without enough context to care about the two main characters, who aren't exactly likeable regardless of some admirable qualities. Plus, the interpersonal conflicts felt too abrupt. One conversation before things got too out of hand would have solved everything, so I kept rolling my eyes at how far it all went in a matter of days with a few choices words from some supposed ally convincing them of stuff. (I hope I'm being vague enough here.) I know there's another book, so I'm open to see how things will turn around, but my hopes aren't too high where it all stands now.

Maturity rating: YA (college age) and up suggested for themes of grief, loss, lying, deceit, murder, war, drug addiction, a man taking liberties with any girl he pleases and brief descriptions of that, and some mention of gory injuries.

I didn't care enough about the MCs

This was an excellent read to me! I loved the characters and how I experienced the varied emotions on their rollercoaster journey. It left me wanting more which my only current complaint is that there doesn't appear to be a sequel. Regardless of that, I'm hooked, I loved the adventure through every twist, the perfect level of fantasy without it feeling too fake or too "real". I can see this starting a new love for a new author.

I'm hooked

I was so enthralled by this story. The characters were well developed. Tale reminds me somewhat of Cain and Abel. Awesome performance as usual from Lauren Fortgang. What a riveting tale. Can't wait for the next book!

Excellent! Loved it.

I wasn't really sure when I started listening to this book that I would like it. However once I got the characters in mind I couldn't stop listening character development was told in such a way that you could even understand the villains point of view even as you wanted to slap him into reality. Can't wait for the next book!!!

Good surprise.

The storyline in intriguing. Father dies and mother is a basket case. Emotionally, supportively bonded twins suddenly separate because the womanizing brother suddenly gains an attitude, a polar personality flip. (I did wonder at the time if the abruptness of the change will be revealed as some kind of drugging). And the sister has to save the day - and will likely do it in the next book; unless the ambiguously motived second players all turn out to be sinister. Narrator Fortgang tries to give us vocal clues about who is bad and good, but actually I did not like that. I thought making wind both the alternative technology that the brother tinkers with and the magical element that the sister is embued with, with the great reveal at the end, was interesting.

Waiting for next book, but not desperately
