About this listen

A medical investigator tormented by secret guilt.
A beautiful doctor with an illicit desire.
A millionaire businessman indulging a passion for murder.
And a human guinea pig who has been awake for seven straight weeks.

Disturb by JA Konrath
You'll never sleep well again...

It's the pharmaceutical breakthrough of the millennium. DruTech Industries proudly presents N-SOM, a pill that completely replaces eight hours of sleep. Feel totally refreshed, both physically and mentally, in just fifteen minutes a night.

The profit potential is boundless. Mankind's productivity will go through the roof. One third of a person's life could be recovered, for only ten dollars a dose.

The FDA sends CDER agent Dr. Bill May to green light N-SOM for American use. The pressure, both political and monetary, is tremendous. But Bill soon harbors fears that N-SOM may not be as safe as early reports indicate...

After meeting brilliant inventors Dr. Nikos Stefanopolous and his beautiful daughter Theena, Bill stumbles into an insidious cover-up that hinges on Emmanuel Tibbets, a human guinea pig who hasn't had a wink of sleep in over fifty days.

Bill's investigation soon unearths a snarled tangle of extortion, conspiracy, taboo sex, hidden secrets, and murderous betrayal.

When N-SOM's deadly side-effects are revealed, along with the shocking truth of how the drug is produced, Bill and Theena find themselves on the run from hired assassins, three letter government agencies, and a breed of psychopath unlike any ever known.

Billions of dollars, and billions of lives, are at stake. Can Bill and Theena survive long enough to expose the truth? Or will the world succumb to an evil that may bring about the extinction of mankind?

This audiobook version also includes the bonus horror short story, "Dear Diary," about a very special pom pon girl.

My Father, My Husband, Pimped me out...

Yes, that is a line in a unique book. Enjoyed the premise and twists in the story. Well narrated. Fun and gory just like a classic horror movie but with a current event subject.

Fair to Middling

I became a Konrath fan from the moment I first came across his work when I found the novel "Endurance". I stayed up all night, unable to put the book down until the last page! The majority of books he's written, on his own or with another writer, I can't get enough of and a couple have become such favourites I've gotten them in both the print and Audible format so I can sit back, relax, and revisit them anywhere and anytime because even though I know what's coming it still never gets old because they're such great stories! Sadly, for me this book didn't grab me the way most of his others have. The plot was intriguing, the characters were interesting, and I enjoy medical thrillers but overall the book just never really grabbed me enough to ever really feel invested enough in it to feel like I couldn't wait to find out what happened next other than a general curiosity to learn the final outcome. I also found the story fairly predictable, something I can't say about most of his other novels. An ok story for sometime like on a plane or anywhere that putting a book down repeatedly won't affect the experience as it's more of what I would call "a light read". Not as intense or chilling as most of his books but an ok choice for some easy, lazy weekend reading, or in this case listening.

Original

Like the story and characters but don't feel the narration helps project the personalities very well.

WET WORK

I HAVE A HEAD IN THE BAG
Stephen King is one of my favorite writers. J.A. Konrath is my favorite horror/gore writer. All of his writings are full of blood and gore. This is no exception. It is fast paced and very entertaining. There is a wonderful twist in the story, that comes out in the end, that makes it even better. It is purely for entertainment, I guarantee you, six months from now I will remember very little from the book, only that it entertained. That was all I asked of the book and it did the job.

MURDER WAS THE ULTIMATE RUSH
If you have read Nancy Kress' Beggars in Spain, then you may want to get the other side of the coin. Both books are about abolishing sleep and the benefits or not. Kress's book is the deep thoughts side, this is the guilty pleasure side.

THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST
I love the narrator and I have heard him before. What I do find funny in a way, is that he has a slight lisp. He does several characters and he does them all very well, but they all have lisps (except the females).

YOU SURE ARE CAUTIOUS FOR AN OLDER GUY?
THAT'S HOW I GOT TO BE AN OLDER GUY!

Good, just not his norm

I actually liked this book. I’m a huge Konrath fan & had never read this one-So I figured- what the heck. It’s not dark humor like his other stuff but worth the 🎧 listen is you’re in between reads.

Not bad

Would you listen to Disturb again? Why?

Yes. First time I listened to it I did it for 'background noise' the next time I will pay closer attention to it.

Which character – as performed by Benjamin L. Darcie – was your favorite?

Manny/David. I love this narrator. He did an awesome job on "The List".

Any additional comments?

I became a Kilborn/Konrath fan after reading Afraid and have since read other books by him. I'm pretty sure I read this book years ago but don't remember it. It was humorous but not as much as some of his other books. Still a decent listen.

meh...

Any additional comments?

This book was interesting enough to keep me listening. The problem i had with this book was, i figure out a key point of the story fairly early,so in my opinion, it was too predictable. But, that being said, i would not let that keep anyone else from buying the book. The story itself was pretty original and pretty good.

This sci fy book was disturbing. Mysterious drug keeps people from sleeping and has unknown side effects, enabling test subjects to be stronger and healthier.
