About this listen

During the 2008 financial crisis, wealth strategist Garrett Gunderson made his timely debut into the literary world with his ground breaking book, Killing Sacred Cows, where he exposed the ingrained fallacies and destructive myths surrounding money and wealth. This New York Times Bestseller provided a fresh and thoughtful approach to debunking many of our archaic beliefs and misguided traditions within the world of personal finance at a time when our trust and comfort in the status quo had been severely fractured.

Now—13 years later—on the heels of both a global pandemic and technological revolution, he returns with his highly anticipated follow-up, Disrupting Sacred Cows

Disruptive events have the power to alter even the most basic assumptions we have about our lives and profoundly change the way we live them. To many, such dramatic and sudden shifts can create chaos, confusion, and fear. However, Garrett asserts that disruption—while sometimes painful in its abruptness—can also be a time rife with opportunity for incredible growth and transformation by allowing it to shake us out of what he calls a “losing game”. When disruption happens, we create a space to play a new game, a “winning game”, one that can create more wealth, deepen relationships, increase contribution to society, and make life more fulfilling.

In his thought-provoking book, Garrett reveals:

  • The presence of Sacred Cows not only in your finances but also your relationships, and the sinister role they play in keeping you from reaching your full potential
  • How disrupting those Sacred Cows can unlock your true potential
  • New ways to play the “Game of Life”, and how to move from a losing game (filled with sacrifice) to a winning game
  • Why the Consumer Condition is a “zero-sum game” that enslaves us to the Sacred Cows of our society—and, more importantly, how to break free from it
  • How Blockchain technology is poised to become the next great digital disruption
  • How Cryptocurrency is becoming the greatest wealth accumulation opportunity of our generation, and how to glean insight from the internet revolution as a roadmap to success

so great work

Just loved this and starting to give it a deeper second listen along with deep dive into his book. I think he is making a great pivot and it has really made me think about my own life in a different way and how I can add and create the most amount of value to myself, family, tribe, community and the world.

Powerful and transformational

I loved killing sacred cows, and this takes things to a whole new level. not only is it updated for current times but there is a vast emphasis on the inner work that must take place to go to higher levels of wealth and abundance. Garrett is a master communicator and teacher through his own life experiences. He's gone first to show others the way to increase their living and lifestyle and reach others through their sole purpose. Phenomenal book Garrett, thank you so much!

Not what was expected

Was excited to “read” or listen to this book based on the last. This isn’t really a book so much as a long form interview of the author. I looked back a few times for a description calling this a long Podcast form interview. I didn’t find it. Not all what I expected. Wasted credit.

Self-indulgent garbage

This is a sad follow from Gunderson's Killing Sacred Cows. Anyone who boasts that his wife claims to be on her 29th marriage to the same guy because he is constantly reinventing himself doesn't understand the statement as the sign of instability of soul that it is... it is not constant progress, but aggressive aimlessness and a childish reaction to “new information.” I could not bear more than two chapters. Gunderson's pseudo-philosophical nonsense, and almost manic declarations that THIS TIME he's found the truth wore me out.

A man with millions has a great deal of wiggle room for emotional experimentation (only a fool would share it all in such a way so soon after "making the discovery"?) Those who carry the burdens of supporting a family do not have such luxuries and should not waste their time being the sounding board for Gunderson's immature self-indulgent, bordering-on-narcissistic musings.

The truest and best self is not found through the kind of incessant navel gazing, self-absorbed reflection, and endless whining about "Mommy left for work while I was napping so I could never find happiness until I healed from it" nonsense. Babies are not born whole only to suffer all their damage along the way from misguided influences of family, friends, enemies and society... (His version of learning sacred cows in this book.) No. Man is born selfish and broken, wrestles with family and society through that selfishness, learns good lessons and bad lessons along the way, and is either enculturated or at constant odds throughout his days (usually a mix of the two). He does not need to get back to some state of grace that he held prior to learning sacred cows, back to some true self of the inner child before the damage came. There is no real wisdom there. You are not called to be a self-creation, nor to discover some truest self within.

Do you want to become your best self? Become a student of Biblical Wisdom, which recognizes that truth does not reside in our hearts waiting for our emotional strip-mining to let it out. What waits for the self-indulgent man deep inside himself are the seven deadly sins and a myriad of self-justifications for that selfishness. It is self-discipline and a commitment to the path of life laid out for man in Scripture that brings wisdom to man and sets him on the road to becoming his best self, and an essential player in making a better world for others.

Not a Finance Book

This is a self help book about letting go and enjoying life. If that’s what you’re into, you might like it though I hear he has a podcast so I bet these items are covered there…

White Privilege Gone Wild

Absolutely worthless content. There should be a button where we can get refunded for the price we paid. Even better a way to charge this jerk for wasting our time.

No new content. This is hours of this guy talking about how much privilege he has that he thinks he earned. News flash: He didn't. He's filthy rich and this is nothing but evidence of how far removed money makes people from real life. He wrote a one man show and became a comedian during the pandemic. While the rest of the world fought to survive he took massive vacations and spent lots of money on self endulgences while completely ignoring that not everyone is filthy rich with staff. And then he tells you everything you are doing is just wrong instead of acknowledging how lucky he got and how insanely unworthy he is. Don't waste your credit on this total junk.
