About this listen

The one who got away is back with a BIG question

You never forget the one that got away, do you?

Nell Mason is extremely happy with her life – or at least, that’s what she tells herself. She’s lucky to have a high-powered job as a lawyer, even if it does come with an eccentric set of billionaire divorce clients. And she’s absolutely fine living with her sweet, if slightly dull, boyfriend Gus in their London flat where they have very sensible sex once (OK, sometimes twice) a week. She’s definitely not stuck in a rut.

But when Nell bumps into childhood friend and first love Arthur Drummond who broke her heart fifteen years ago, she’s more than a little shaken. The seemingly perfect life she’s worked so hard for starts to feel, well, less perfect. Maybe Nell’s been kidding herself all these years. Can she ever get over her first love?

I really love British romantic comedies with relatable characters that don’t do anything to cringy. This is everything I could’ve hoped for. I saw one review that didn’t like the narration, but I think it’s great! I’ve heard some terrible narration in my 12+ years of listening to audiobooks, and this is definitely not one of them. I love the voice of the narrator. (Who also happens to be the author, which I think is extremely impressive.) and the storyline is paced excellently.
I am so pleased that I have come across this author, and excited to listen to the rest of her books.

Big fan of the author. This book is a favorite. The characters are interesting and their situations are relatable. I always turn the narration speed down to 90 for this author/narrator - her emotion shines through at a slower speed. Added treat - one of my favorite paragraphs from Jane Eyre (something Rochester says to Jane as he's leading up to his ill-fated and illegal proposal to her) crept into this book, paraphrased only slightly, as the heroine muses about her love from long ago. 😀

Great Fun

This novel is a joke. First of all, Money-Coutts is a terrible narrator - her voice is so off-putting, and she literally 'narrates' the book. She reads it. There's no change in inflection, no nuance, No matter what the scene, the emotion, the interaction - it's read in the same flat, sing-song cadence better-suited to, oh say, a tour guide.

Then there are the gratuitous sex scenes that Money-Coutts is so fond of injecting into her novels. Her fantasies are pedantic and, beyond this, it's very odd to listen to the author of these fantasies read them aloud. The narration alone is simply unbearable. She always reads her own books - always annoying - but this one is the worst. I couldn't finish it.

But that's no loss, because the story lines are ridiculous and the characters one-dimensional and the plot turns cringe-worthy. This book feels thrown-together and phoned in on deadline.

Give it a pass.

No redeeming qualities - give it a pass
