About this listen

DIAMOND: The Memoir of a Lost Daughter of Japan tells the tale of a small girl orphaned in a hostile foreign country, who must live by her wits and courage until fate decides to favor her many years later.

Told in the thrilling voice of an expert storyteller, this memoir reads like addictive fiction yet is factual down to the letter. It is a compassionate look into human hearts under the worst of conditions, and at what a gentle soul will do to protect the people she loves.

Set in the Philippines near the end of the Second World War, DIAMOND rolls back the curtain on a time and place about which little has been written. It is history. It is drama. It is a story of personal triumph.

Moving, Authentic

Orphaned in the Philippines towards the end of WWII, Diamond survives alone after the murder of her parents and sibling. She shares her experiences, fears, and private struggles quietly but passionately.

The author, Etsuko Diamond Miyagi, provides vivid insights into her struggles as a female orphan navigating a male-dominated world. A masterful storyteller, she immerses the listener fully, portraying each struggle, fear, and danger while remaining humble, compassionate, and kind. From the outset, she shows that humanity and courage are essential to survival. Her triumph is not only in overcoming adversity but also in staying true to herself. The dialogue is authentic and propels the narrative forward, with each character well-developed and vividly portrayed. Blending historical accuracy with personal experiences, emotions, and thoughts, her story resonates deeply.

The narrator, Anne Marie Lewis, delivers a strong performance. She effortlessly slips into the character of Diamond and vividly captures her essence. Her deliberate pacing, well-placed pauses, and intonations bring out the emotions and actions, enriching the narrative with depth.

This audiobook offers a captivating and authentic portrayal of her struggles and triumphs. I highly recommend it.
