Der Verbrecher Sanders, genannt "Der schwarze Kapitän", schlüpft in die Rolle des naiven Heinrich Wallerstein, um an das Vermögen von dessen Onkel zu kommen. Heinrichs Onkel ist der Westmann Samuel Wallerstein, genannt Sam Firegun. Heinrich gelingt auf hoher See aber die Flucht. Mit Unterstützung des Steuermanns Peter Polter versucht er, Sam Firegun in den Weiten des Wilden Westens zu finden und ihn vor Sanders zu warnen. Unterstützung bekommen sie von Winnetou, dem Häuptling der Apachen. Gemeinsam mit dem brutalen Jean Letrier kann Sanders das Versteck Sam Fireguns aufspüren. Firegun und seine Begleiter scheinen verloren zu sein, denn die Verbrecher haben Hilfe von den Ogellallah. - In San Francisco verfolgt Sanders ehemalige Vertraute, genannt "Miss Admiral", unterdessen einen perfiden Plan, um das ehemalige Sklaven- und Piratenschiff "Horrible" in ihre Gewalt zu bekommen. Die Ereignisse gipfeln in einer Konfrontation auf hoher See. Für Sam Firegun und seine Begleiter, für Sanders und Miss Admiral wird es ein Kampf auf Leben und Tod.
