Acerca de esta escucha
The fatigue and the hopelessness—doesn’t it ever stop? Sometimes. But when it stops, there’s the fear and anticipatory anxiety about its return. And it does return. With a mental illness that’s so powerful yet so mysterious, is there any hope?
Depression ruled my life for nine years. Everything seemed hopeless when I was depressed. It was utter misery. When I wasn’t depressed, I was constantly afraid and worried about its return. What an exhausting, unfulfilling way to live. Could anything be done? I tried medication. Mostly, it numbed me. I was alive, but the spirit that made me “me” seemed to be gone. Were my only choices to live in despair or to be without despair, but at the cost of a sense of aliveness and vitality?
One day, I stumbled upon what I now call the Emotional Discharge Method. Though I discovered it at no credit to myself, it’s what eventually led to a shedding away of depression. What was left when the depression had shed off? A completely new outlook on life....

Codependency has kept you stuck. For codependents, happiness is fleeting. It's there one moment, gone the next. Even when you try so hard to do the right thing and treat people well, stable happiness still evades you. Why is this? If you're codependent, you may have difficulty standing up for yourself and speaking your truth. You may believe that you're responsible for ensuring others don't feel emotional pain in their lives.

Being in a relationship without knowing how to share your feelings and receive your partner’s feelings in useful ways is like jumping into a pool without knowing how to swim. You can flail around all you want, but it’s not going to keep you afloat for very long—you need to be able to move in any direction at will. Like swimming, knowing how to share your feelings and respond to your partner's feelings will move your relationship in the direction you want: toward more intimacy, closeness, connection, and trust.

Negative thinking—it seems to have no end. The question is, can anything be done about it? Negative thinking is a self-perpetuating mechanism. Negative thinking fuels more negative thinking, which in turn fuels even more. Around and around it goes, never losing steam or momentum. All the while, you’re utterly fatigued and exhausted. Ten years can go by, and the mind-numbing cycle still will not have stopped. Because it’s self-sustaining, negative thinking only grows stronger with each passing month, year, and decade. Can it be stopped?

This book helped me become my authentic self
I read this book two years ago when I was in the throes of depression, anxiety, in a long term toxic relationship. It became the foundation for change. that i had been seeking for over 40 years. I was able to finally emotionally release all the trauma I had been holding onto since childhood, release all the pain and emotions that created who i was. It takes time to truly heal, but I truly believe Nic has the key to success. You have to get it out. When your loved ones hurt you the pain shapes who you are. It also helped me see my 37 year marriage was not what I thought it was. Now, I am building a new, positive, healthy relationship with my husband after dissolving our co dependent toxic relationship that we thought was 'normal.' It is so wonderful to finally be here after years of my own self victimization. I was able to transform myself into who I really am and was quite surprised to realize I like who I am today. I suffered a terrible estrangement from my mother and daughter and for 13 years carried guilt and shame and just resigned myself to that self limiting belief. I listened to this book while in a two week PTSD debilitating episode and finally was able to relate to someone who understood how I felt. I would get so angry when I would do well emotionally for a few weeks then it would all come back. Nic was right, I had to release the trauma. This book has led me to hours and hours of self help and I am truly grateful for its raw honestly. I practice mindfulness and meditate daily and I have the self compassion I need to maintain my sense of self. A truly life changing, transformative listen or read. I highly recommend it to everyone who experiences any kind of PTSD, depression, anxiety. Many thanks to the author. Your honesty touched my heart in my deepest, darkest moments of life.
