About this listen

An accident on an icy road pins a paramedic father against his biggest fear: His two children are in the backseat, and only one can be saved. A decision must be made.

Excerpt from the book:

I'll never forget the cold wind from the north as it blew in off of the Maumee River. I'll never forget the way the tears on my face turned into slivers of ice as they rolled quickly down my crimson cheeks. And worst of all , I'll never forget the taste of the oil, as the barrel of the blued Smith and Wesson model 1911 sat queerly on my tongue.

A decision had to be made that November evening, roughly 18 years after the hardest decision of my life and of my career was forced upon me as my Dodge Ram sat idling on the side of Route Six. Only, this time, the decision wasn't mine to make. This time, it was in the hands of my son, Stephen. Literally, in both of his hands.

I liked it

I like the technical aspects the author includes, it gives the story authentic context. It's a quick read for so many feelings.

Decisions.

I'd like to start this by saying I am in no way a book reviewer. Also this review may contain spoilers.

Decisions by Jason Myers is a very short story, I knew that as soon as I downloaded it. That being the case I knew there wasn't going to be very much character development, which is something I thoroughly enjoy about the books I read or listen to.

The story all in all was pretty good. It kept my attention the whole way through.

The only thing that I didn't really care for (and this may be simply because the book was so short or due to the narration of it) was that there didn't seem to be a lot of feeling from the main character. The man is a single father to twins, his ex, the kids mother, left him and landed herself in prison, where she ended up taking her own life. A little later in the story he wrecks his truck and one of his sons dies. Then at the ending his other son commits suicide in an attempt to reconnect with his twin brother.

As all this is happening there doesn't seem to be any feeling from the father. It almost seems as he is disassociated with everyone in his family dying. And maybe that is how the writer intends it, or maybe that's just how the narrator presented it to me.

All in all the story was decent. Narration was okay.

I will be checking out some of Jason's work in the future.
