About this listen

After years of mistreatment, the Israelites prepare to defend themselves against the oppressive Canaanites. Readying for war not only takes secret military training but also an Israelite leader who is willing to both stand against generations of oppression and follow God.

Deborah, a young Israelite woman, lives a quiet and isolated life with her father and brothers. As a shepherdess in the hills near her home, she knows well the perils of her work. But when faced with incredible danger, she witnesses a series of remarkable events that preserve her life. The hand of the Lord is apparent, and it is clear that hers will be no ordinary life. Years later, Deborah is a faithful wife and mother when she learns that the Third Judge of Israel has died - and she has been called to take his place. It is a tumultuous time in history, and soon, Deborah - prophetess, judge, and military leader - faces a seemingly insurmountable task: alongside the commander of the Israelite army, Deborah must lead ten thousand soldiers in their final campaign against their Canaanite oppressors with only her faith in God to guide her.

A sweeping tale of victory, but disappointing personalities & awful narrator

I really enjoyed how the author helped us dive into the character of Deborah & her surrounding characters in the context of her culture & faith. She is someone uniquely famous in the Bible who stands out not just for being a woman of authority (in a patriarchal society) but for being the great leader that she was with the voice of God that Israel needed in a time of toirmoil. Moore did a great job showing her impact, importance, & authenticity as a Judge &Prophetess of God. I love how her faith & blessing from are undeniable.

As always, it's totally appropriate to take liberties with personalities & character building when there are not many facts to go on. But it bothered me how meek & shy she was written. As if she wanted to be a quiet traditional-house-wife & had to be pushed out is her comfort zone & needed the approval of all the men in her family to find the courage to serve God as the Judge of Israel. I don't buy that. A true Judge doesn't need man's approval, only God's. & The narrator made it SO MUCH WORSE!!!

SHE GAVE HER A FRAGILE, BREATHY, TIMID SHY VOICE!!! IT WAS SO ANNOYING!!! Yet the voice for Jael, a neutral outsider, was given so much confidence & elegance, without a hint of arrogance ~ THAT would have made a perfect Deborah character. I know it's all speculation, but it made it very difficult to believe & finish the story. Most of the Men's voices were also stoic, slow & monotone. Clearly, the author & narrator have never met anyone named Deborah. Every woman I've met named after this powerful military leader of God has a strong voice & a will of iron, lol.

Love it.

Wonderfully done. I was captivated from the beginning to the end. Wonderfully written. The visuals in my mind will last forever, now when reading judges I’ll have their faces to remember as well as the lives the author gave.

Excellent narration easy listen

Very educational but narration was extremely easy to listen to as well. Without a good narration I can’t make myself listen to a book regardless of how well written.

A love story

I'm not sure what I expected, but the love story between the 4 main characters was interesting. I didn't give 5 star because I couldn't stand the monotone male voices the narrator tried to pull off.

An Awakening!

The women of the Old Testament were courageous! But Deborah is my favorite! She had courage, dignity, strength and an ear to our God. My heart was touched by her spirit! It made me realize that women don’t need to fight for equality as much as they need to be TRUE to themselves.

Very well Done!

Narration is excellent. Easy to follow and distinct voices/characters. Nothing was offensive to the Word of God. This tells the love story of key characters leading up to what we know the result is recorded in scripture. Delightful, adventurous, suspenseful and well done. It's a great Story!!!! Gentiles and Jews alike could get something out of this historical fiction. I was encouraged by the telling of women chosen by God to fulfill their purpose. Recommend!!!
