About this listen

At first it appeared to be a normal sickness, but when the bodies began to drop, the nightmare rose.

When a video goes viral of a man's dead son walking around, people begin to speculate. These speculations only continue to grow as a new virus sweeps its way across the East Coast, killing thousands. It soon appears that someone is trying to contain this disease, snatching almost every infected body during the night. As the government steps in, the people become aware that they are under attack from something much worse than a virus. Now they must ban together and fight for their lives against the creatures of the night.

Filled with suspense, fright, and action, Dead by Dawn is sure to be one of the best vampire fiction novels of the year. One of the greatest vampire plagues that you're not going to want to miss!

Good Book, Terrible Narrator

I own the Kindle version of this book and thought I'd enjoy the Audible version. The narrator is stilted, changes mid-chapter, and the voices are bad. He'd have done a better job to just read it straight, no inflections. Also, I'm not sure where this was recorded but at one point you hear a car honk in the background. Read the book, skip the audiobook.

Dead by Dawn

Any additional comments?

Little bit different than many of post apocalyptic illness scenarios that I have read recently. Vampires instead of zombies.

While I really like the concept I was disappointed in the story. It had much more potential but fell short.
The writing could use some improvement it just seems choppy with short non descriptive sentences.

The story starts off slow and takes a bit to get interesting. Trying to outwit and survive vampires of coarse it's going to get interesting. These are the classic vampires, fast, hate sunlight, have to be invited in kind of guys. Overall an entertaining story.

This is the first time I have listened to Joe Messina narrate a story. While he has a nice voice his narration was just flat and dry. The emotions of the characters don't always come through. A little more enthusiasm is needed. He does have some good character voices. Narration does not always flow smoothly, to fast at times, repeated words or awkward pauses here and there. He is not the worst narrator I have heard. With a little more experience he could be a really good narrator.

Background/static noise in the prologue. Chapter 35 repeated line about 7min in.

Vampires......Everywhere......

Where does Dead by Dawn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would say in my top 75.

What other book might you compare Dead by Dawn to and why?

Think about any zombie apocalypse book, but instead of slow walking zombies you have super fast, intelligent, very strong vampires, kind of like I Am Legend I guess.

Which scene was your favorite?

Any scene where Joe and Keith put the hurt on the vampires, those small victories keep you going because most of the book doesn't favor humanity.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

For the time no, but it was very interesting and kept my attention.

Vampires Instead of Zombies - Nice Change!!

I enjoyed this book as the story is very well written and honed with lots of vampires instead of zombies (Nice change if you like vampires)! The author provides plenty of suspense and action that he details to perfection, allowing you to envision each scene as it happens in your minds' eye (some are quite disturbing). I found I was engaged and interested throughout the entire book.

The narration, however, lacked. If Mr. Messina had added some excitement to his voice and increased his pace to help build the suspense and terror I would have given this book 5 stars. For the most part, however, Mr. Messina did a good job. He has a pleasant voice to listen to but needs to add inflection and not sound monotone.

Post-apocalyptic vampires

I’ve grown rather tired of the zombie trope, so Dead by Dawn peaked my interest with its utilization of vampires instead of zombies. It starts off a bit slow, but once the vampires make an appearance it really picks up the pace with lots of suspense and action. I enjoyed how each chapter had a different set of characters and viewpoints that depict slice of life scenarios during the vampire outbreak. This book also provides terrifying vampires (not wimpy ones) along with plenty of gory scenes, which is a definite plus! However, the narration is a bit monotonous and I had difficulty distinguishing characters, but I did not let that bother me too much.

If you’re a fan this genre you should give Dead by Dawn a try- it has a enjoyable new spin on the tired old zombie apocalypse theme!

entertaining

the plot and book were good. the writing could use a little improvement but it was OK. the narrator seemed to stutter on some words but overall he did a good job. he could've used some improvement on making the voices for each character easier to tell apart.
