About this listen

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover, Eric Northman, and his "child", Pam, are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot - which is much more complicated than she knows.

The Darkest of All...

This installment is thus far the darkest (to me) of all the books, but I really enjoyed it. Some of the other reviews have lamented the decline of comedy that we've experienced in the former novels, but I found it just as enjoyable a read as the others. At this point, Sookie's been through so much in such a short time that I found it humanizing that her bright spark has been dimmed a bit- Really, who of us could maintain complete optimism in such times?

I honestly found myself hurting for Sookie and Eric, and feeling her bleakness over the situations in which they found themselves. I have no idea what's coming for them next, and I very much look forward to #12!

Another good one!

This is another good story by Charlaine Harris, but is not my favorite in the series. Book 1 and 4 are still at the top of my list.

Not my fave, but still very good

This was not my favorite Sookie book. The mood was so down and depressing, with no joy at all. The chemistry between Sookie and Eric just didn't seem to be there, which was a HUGE let down. But it was still better than most, and I love the narrator! I really hope the next book has a bit more going on, and some lighter moments.

Maybe if..........

The plot was a great and would have been excellent in my opinion, if it weren’t for the following: Eric’s unjust rough treatment of Sookie after the fight (he has always treated her with gentle affection( not sure what all that was about)); Sookie over reacting with the Amelia issue (I mean come on she thought she was doing what was best for Sookie (others have done worst )); Sookie not treating Eric the same way she treated Amelia after discovering his father’s arrangements and him not telling her immediately. Have I mentioned how amazing the narrator was? She was remarkable by the way. I could go on listening forever. Oh, and it is definitely not worth more money than the previous books.

My Favorite So Far

What did you love best about Dead Reckoning?

I loved that you got more of Sookie's family history and how a certain lawyer had a play in that. Loved that Sookie has undergone a lot of changes and I think her reaction to things are certainly going to affect her personal relationships, seems like she's on the verge of making some difficult decisions about some people in her life. I know some people though that she was too down in this book but come-on, she's not the same person as when Bill first walked into the bar - she's killed people, been tortured, not too mention someone tries to kill her 3-4 times in every book. Shoot - you'd start to be a bit of a pessimist too. Just my opinion:)

What did you like best about this story?

I love the character, love that she is so relatable. She's not interested in becoming a vampire like so many other female leads in these types of novels. Love the sense of humor that Ms. Harris brings into these books, and I find myself giggling out loud sometimes. I can't wait for May to come for the next book!

What about Johanna Parker’s performance did you like?

Excellent, best narrator ever.

Hooked on Sookie

I entered the "True Blood" franchise and fandom late in the HBO series. When I discovered it, I was bitten and smitten from Season 1, Episode 1. I poured through each season, having "True Blood Marathons" as my schedule allowed. Once I finished the series, I decided to experience the original works of Charlaine Harris. I haven't been disappointed, yet. I appreciate the original characters and story lines as well as the re-created characters in made-for-HBO series. If I hadn't made the commitment to listen to the book series, I would have missed the talented, enjoyable and entertaining narration of Johanna Parker. She is able, through her Sookie-sound-alike voice, to take me through the original story. All the while, I have pictures of the True Blood Series actors faces running through my head. I will be sad, as I was when the HBO series ended, to get to the end of the book series. I think I will miss my friends. I find myself saying phrases like, "Jesus Christ, Shepherd of Judea" often...not out of disrespect for our savior, but from the expressions Sookie has infused into my life. If you are a True Blood fan, do yourself a favor and join Audible to get "Dead Until Dark" for free...caution...you won't stop there! You'll not stop until the end!

Mediocre at best

*sigh*

I love the Sookie Stackhouse series but this one just didn't quite meet the mark. There were editing gaffe's all over the place (for example, a character acting as though they didn't know something that was just told to them in the previous chapter) and lots of repetition. So much mention of the fairies but nothing done with that plotline. I Just not as enthralling as previous books in the series. Hopefully book #12 will be better and will pick up the threads that were just left hanging in this installment.
