Acerca de esta escucha

Ex-CIA master assassin Court Gentry has always prided himself on his ability to disappear at will, to fly below the radar and exist in the shadows - to survive as the near-mythical Gray Man. But when he takes revenge upon a former employer who betrayed him, he exposes himself to something he’s never had to face before.

A killer who is just like him.

Code-named Dead Eye, Russell Whitlock is a graduate of the same ultra-secret Autonomous Asset Program that trained and once controlled Gentry. But now, Whitlock is a free agent who has been directed to terminate his fellow student of death. He knows how his target thinks, how he moves, and how he kills. And he knows the best way to do the job is to make Gentry run for his life - right up until the moment Dead Eye finally ends it.

I have listened to a couple of books in Mark Gearney's "The Gray Man" series. I've started to imagine what the shadowy rogue agent Courtland Gentry might be like if I saw him at the local 7-11. He'd be wearing jeans and a t-shirt and a black baseball cap; open the door for the elderly woman coming in just behind him; pick out a triangle sandwich, an apple and milk; and make a friendly nod as he pays the young clerk with cash, carefully looking down so his face isn't caught on the security camera. Gentry'd be a wraith, forgotten as soon as he leaves the store.

If internet rumors are true, I'll find out how some Hollywood director sees Gentry, but probably not as soon as I'd like. I hope the movie's based on "Dead Eye" (2013), because it's really good. This is a thriller and "The Gray Man" is a series, so it's no spoiler to say that Gentry lives. The question is what's his mission; who's trying to stop and kill him, and why; and what technologically innovative way he uses to survive.

What I really liked is that Gearney developed two really complex characters, including a great female character. She's a kick a** American born Israeli intelligence officer, serving in the legendary Mossad. I'm a chick, and I like to have someone I can identify with. I'm middle aged, and I finally admitted to myself that I'm never going to find myself absorbed in a romance novel, or identify with E. L. James' Anastasia Steele and the (other) Grey man. I'm glad Gearney wrote a woman character I admire in a genre I like.

The plot was intricate, and it took a long time to figure out what was going on. I could have avoided the suspense by reading the publisher's synopsis, but that would have taken the anticipation out of the listen. What's the fun in that?

The title of the review is Gentry's CIA covert operator name, and his security access code.

A whiz-bang, non-stop caper with multiple angles of pursuit. The Gray man appears to have met his match and maybe had too much of a peek into his creation this time out. This time around Gentry is getting tired and manhunt technology is evolving faster than his skills of evasion, but he is the Gray Man and he is the best.
I'll not going to nit-pic this fine novel of intrigue and sometimes over-the-top brutality. It is superb escapist writing and I'm all for that!

Would you listen to Dead Eye again? Why?

Probably. The plot was twisting, but not to extreme.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dead Eye?

When the head of Israeli group called Gentry.

What about Jay Snyder’s performance did you like?

The voices were recognizable and believable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

I thought this was the best in the series so far...

Best Gray Man Yet!

Lot's of non-stop action. I have already listened twice. This review is 4 months overdue because I was procrastinating to find the time to write a proper review. Just buy it! If you like a no nonsense anti terrorist hero, then enjoy the gray man series. I hope Mark Greaney keeps it pure. Baldacci was great in the beginning but after he became popular he started to "phone it in". Greaney is fantastic and equally entertaining as the "Mitch Rapp" counter terrorism novels. Highly recommended. Oh...the narrator is first rate as well.

I really love this series

What other book might you compare Dead Eye to and why?

Robert Ludlum's Bourne Supremacy

Any additional comments?

This is by far IMHO the best book in Gray Man series. I was happily disappointed or did I mean pleased? with this novel since after reading the first three books in the series I practically gave up on Gray Man. The first three books were rather mediocre and formulaic. They were readable but IMHO very straightforward and not very interesting. Not much suspense there. However, this fourth book is quite different. Here we've got all the components of a very good spy thriller: interesting plot, interesting characters, just awesome action scenes, suspense/mystery and much more. This book reminded me a lot of Jason Bourne movies. I'm starting to think that Mark Greaney is developing into a major talent and eventually could become a new Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum. Now I'm looking forward to his new book, hopefully this year.

Best of Gray Man series by a long shot

The overall story did feel a bit contrived and cliche. And Court's character needs consistency (in the series and the book). Capabilities, awareness, anger, decisiveness, etc. Why does he seem to naive and clueless at critical junctions and then super human at others?

Really Enjoyed It, But...

What made the experience of listening to Dead Eye the most enjoyable?

I have been a long time Gray Man fan. This is the author's best work so far. The non stop action that keeps listener on edge of their seats and keep wanting more.

Any additional comments?

Jay had done a great job narrating. Hope he continues with future novels.

Brilliantly Fantastic

Would you consider the audio edition of Dead Eye to be better than the print version?

Great audio. Did not read.

What did you like best about this story?

Gentry is a great character. Over coming obstacles from multi spy agencies, and set ups for failure. The Grey Man is true to his mission?

What about Jay Snyder’s performance did you like?

Was able to separate each character during the narration

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If possible, I would.

Any additional comments?

Great series, must read. Look forward to authors Tom Clancy series.
