About this listen

Two-hundred-year-old Daegan Blackwell is one of the last remaining Empowered, an ancient magical race. Daegan's duty is to lead and protect his remaining Brethren in the coming war foretold by prophecy. The last thing he expects is to meet the one woman who will either save or destroy him - his destined mate.

Fiercely independent Realtor Olivia Farrell believes darkly handsome Daegan is simply a prospective client. Until she's attacked by a man with a strange aura - and Daegan fights him off, taking away her pain with just his touch. At first, Olivia refuses to believe she's part of a magical race; yet mounting evidence and her powerful chemistry with Daegan are too strong to deny.

But as Daegan's partner, Olivia becomes a target in the battle between good and evil that threatens her life, as well as the very existence of the Empowered. And the only one who can save her is the man claiming to be her destiny....

Good story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would

Have you listened to any of Phoebe Simon’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have not but the narrator is what made the story for me.

Has the next book been released yet? :-)

I really enjoyed this book because it provided a new paranormal race with a good plot. Olivia was not a totally weak female lead, she had her doubts and suspicions as anyone would. Dageon was okay as the male lead. The build up and setting were nicely done. I suppose if I were to wish for something it would have been a deeper level of psychic gifts with just a bit more action. The intimate encounter for the lead characters had me saying I can't wait until they actually "hookup". When they finally got around to it, it was good but could have been a bit better. ????

HERE COME THE IRISH

I enjoyed the narration for this new series. I think this may be one of the best Irish brogues I have heard to date. But that’s not what makes this a good start to a very interesting series. This story doesn’t drag it keeps going introducing new characters and plots that have the potential to spin this into a great paranormal series. I like the development of different paranormal characters and their strengths and their weaknesses. The romance between Daegan and Olivia is the typical must have my mate thing, but the twist is in the paranormal connection. The villain is a strong enough character to carry through into the next book. Because of his personality and what it appears he has gone through you find yourself wanting to know what makes it tick. Still hoping sometime one author will take the plunge and create a strong female lead that at least stands on equal footing with her male. But alas…. I am looking forward to book #2 .. If you enjoyed the breed series this has the potential to be just as of a series.

Love it!

I loved the storyline! Sexy strong men and strong women as well. I am super into Vaughn the heartbroken, hardened warrior. Excited to see more the story unfold.

It has possibilities...

This story was a different paranormal story. I purchased for that reason..curious.It had the possibility to be so good. In my opinion the perpetual referral to mating while necessary took over the story in such a way that it was diminishing. And the ending was so abrupt. My thought was "What the heck?" I think it is to insure you get the next one. I don't think I will. The narrator was good, very professional. I think as strong as the portrayal of the men in this story needed a male voice. She was not able to give them the voice strength.

Really liked it..

Any additional comments?

However, there were some really stupid mistakes but the worst was when she was riding along with the top DOWN on her convertable then when the bad guy forced her off the road she tried to get out of the drivers door and when it was stuck she crawled across the middle column and forced the passenger door open, wasting time. Why didn't she just climb out of the OPEN car instead of trying to get out the doors. Just silly..
I really liked Daegan and Liv. And the storyline was great but I really don't like a story that leaves you hanging. This is definitely NOT a stand alone book if you ever want to know what happens to OL, and heaven only knows when the stories of Cade and Vaughn and going to available. I try not to get caught up in books without end and have to wait 2 or 3 years for the rest of the series. I might just have to pretend I never read this book.

As to the narrator? I have no idea how she ever got 4 and 5 stars on the other reviews. For Daegan all she did was whisper and give him a terrible Irish accent. Cade sounded just like a woman, not at all manly. She had absolutely no emotion, except for Liv, occasionally. There was never a whisper or sign of laughter or anger in her tone. Her voice was monotone, robotic. She sounded like she was bored to death during the whole book and when you sound like during sex it makes the sex horrible. The only people who ever sounded manly were the bad guys. That's my opinion!!

A New Take on The Paranormal

I was thoroughly surprised with this book. I really enjoyed the new take on a paranormal species. I can hardly wait for the second book in this series. Some things remain the same though. Finding your mate and not being able to resist the mating call. However, the rest of the story was very entertaining. There is much still to be discovered in this series, I like the way the author dosen't let on about all the abilities the empowered have so a few surprises are in store. Not to mention the abilities the bad guys possess. All in all a very entertaining read. Not boring in the least.

I had never listened to anything by Ms. Simon before. I must say she did more than a credible job. She was very easy to listen to and her male voices were well done.

A NEW 'MUST HAVE' PARANORMAL SERIES

I wasn't expecting much from this book but I was VERY pleasantly surprised! It had a good unusual paranormal plot that carried you along and, as the story unfolds, it builds to give you more and more with each chapter you listen to. Great characters, each with their own abilities but the writer doesn't give it all away and you're left wondering what else can they do. Coupled with this is the 'mating fever' between Daeclan and Olivia that pulls at them - willing or not into a bonding relationship that was thoroughly enjoyable.

I listened to this on normal speed which is always a sign of an entertaining listen and it's left me watching for book 2 in the series which will be an automatic download now.

Worth a credit? Yes and if you like the genre, then you won't be disappointed.

Ok....but

What did you like best about Darkest Caress? What did you like least?

I liked the story line but I really thought both the hero and the heroine were kind of annoying and some of their actions were stupid. Would've appreciated the story better if the characters actions were a little more realistic
