About this listen
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever.
Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Story
In November 1965, some 450 men of the First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was chopped to pieces. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. How these men persevered makes a vivid portrait of war at its most inspiring and devastating.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

The wall just didn’t look right. Alex has been trying to cope. Life after his deployment had been rough. His ex-wife thought he needed to stop disappointing their daughter. She was right. He would try harder. With six hours before his little girl’s fourth birthday party, he saw the anomaly. One wall was too short. Plenty of time to tear out a panel and look behind it. He found a brick wall. His house wasn’t made of brick. Behind that was another just like the first. He still had time. When the second wall came down, Alex stood and stared at the shining doorway.

Beautiful, tender, haunting, and full of excitement, this is the memoir of famed author, explorer, Glacier Park guide, trader, and historian of the Blackfoot Indians, James Willard Schultz. With the Blackfoot woman, whom he deeply loved, from 1880 to 1903, Schultz lived the life of a Blackfoot Indian with Nat-ah-ki and her people. In 1836, when she was nine years old, Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanche Indians. This is the story of how she grew up with them, mastered their ways, married one of their leaders, and became, in every way, a Comanche woman. It is also the story of a proud and innocent people whose lives pulsed with the very heartbeat of the land. It is the story of a way of life that is gone forever.

A young Native American, Abel has come home from war to find himself caught between two worlds. The first is the world of his father’s, wedding him to the rhythm of the seasons, the harsh beauty of the land, and the ancient rites and traditions of his people. At age 23, the Harvard-educated Bostonian traveled the Rocky Mountains, living among the Dakota Sioux. In his journal, he captured the color, spirit, and perspective of his era, as well as the exuberant confidence that was the mark of his time. Great book / great movie / great performance
I saw Dances with Wolves with Kevin Costner as a teenager when it first came out and was moved by how powerful the story was for similar movies at that time - not to mention the longest movie (3 hours) I'd ever seen. I never read the book until a few weeks ago when it popped up on Audible due to my being a fan of the reader, George Guidall. The book is as good as the movie - and the movie follows the book very, very closely. Between Michael Blake's description of American in the 1800's and performance by George Guidall - it's one of my favorite books this year.
And I had no idea there was a sequel - I'll start that one ASAP!

Superb book, superb narrator
The movie pales in comparison with the book. This book gives a wonderful look into the mind of the Comanches; those they fought and those they found. I can't imagine how some reviewers did not like the narrator George Guidall, on of the most popular narrators of all time. Perhaps they never listened to the Walt Longmire series.
All the characters are well developed and each is different and very interesting. And when I say "all character" I mean animal as well as human.

Finally a book where the movie had done it justice
It’s truly remarkable how closely the book and the movies story were. Having seen the movie countless times, I could close my eyes and watch the scene play out in my head while listening to Michael Blake’s words.
If you were a fan of the movie, then this book helps to color in the edges of the map that is the world of Dances with Wolves.

Excellent
Better than the movie. Although the movie does follow closely but different ending. Can’t wait to listen to 2nd book.
