About this listen

A young mage-in-training is unwittingly pulled into a violent political upheaval, in the first book of this new epic fantasy trilogy by Miles Cameron, author of the Traitor Son Cycle series.

Aranthur is a promising young mage. His talents compel him to attend University to develop his abilities further. But the world is not safe for a mage, and after a confrontation leaves him no choice but to display his skill with a blade, Aranthur is instructed to train under a renowned Master of Swords.

During his intensive training he begins to question the bloody life he's chosen. And while studying under the Master, Aranthur is conscripted to the City Militia. Soon after, he finds himself thrown into the middle of a political revolt that will impact everyone he's come to know.

To protect his friends, Arnathur will be forced to decide if he can truly follow the Master of Swords into a life of violence and continue his cold-hearted commitment to the blade.

Great book, only a few gripes

Overall: The book was great. It held my attention most of the time and had a fairly interesting story. I'd personally recommend it to anyone looking for a book like this. Performance was great as well. No complaints there.

Few gripes:
1. The story did have a lack of focus. MC didn't seem to be doing a whole lot besides just living his life with some interesting occurrences mixed in. That didn't leave a whole lot of room for change in the story.
ALERT Possible spoiler -
2. The whole Daliah (is that how to spell her name?) relationship. Not a fan of how the author went about that. Everything seemed to be blamed on the MC despite him clearly being busy, used by her, and ignored a good chunk of the time. Relationships are a two way street. Idk why book authors seem to blame the dude like 90% of the time when every single allegation against the MC (in this case anyway) could just as easily be made against the GF.

Fantastic!

Miles Cameron delivers again with this first novel in what I fully expect to be another hit series from one of the top contemporary authors in the fantasy genre. If you haven't had the opportunity to read his previous work this is an excellent book to cut your teeth on to get a sense of the superb characters and rich worlds and storytelling full of wonder, action and mystery. I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

Good characters, great pace

The main character’s development was enjoyable and the supporting characters offer a range of personalities. The storyline epitomizes the suspension of disbelief, so many random encounters made for a great story. I enjoyed the pace of the first part of the book; however, the second part felt rushed. I do look forward to the next book.

Love the immersion

On problem : I'm sure the paper version has a glossary of fencing terms if this had such a download and setting primer it would have made it easier.

Anyone looking for action, intrigue and charters with depth will love this book.
Mark Meadows was amazing. It was the first audiobook narrated by him that I've listened too. I will look for others.
