Publisher's summary

Don’t miss The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, now a major motion picture. Discover this first installment of the internationally best-selling Mortal Instruments series and “prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly).

When 15-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder - much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing - not even a smear of blood - to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

HOW did I miss THIS??!!??!!

I was walking in Wal-Mart and saw a display for a new Shadowhunter book. A review on the display said something like Harry Potter on steroids or something lol so I decided to look into it. I did remember years ago a Mortal Instruments movie but had no idea of the books. I'm SO happy I found this! they are right, it is Harry Potter on steroids! 😁 I love the action and the narration was fabulous. Audible RULES..... Except they should put these series in a bundle pack option....other than that I'm one happy listener!❤

Love TMI

I have all the books, but forgot to bring them with me to college. I purchased them when each book came out. I've grown up with them and they filled my tween years with magic. When I bought this audio book, the TV show Shadowhunters was premiering in a month. Feeling the need to renter the world of Vampires, Fay, werewolves, and warlocks, I bought this. The reader is fantastic! She sounds like how I imagined Clary to sound. Her acting and voice changes are fantastic. Not a big fan of the English accents for the Shadowhunters, but I know that's what they did in the movie. After reading these books so many times with just my voice, it's hard to find a reader who will make it feel the same, but this reader nailed it!

Pretty good

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The accents that she gave to some of the characters were really bad, so it was a little hard to get through the book.

Any additional comments?

The story itself was pretty good, but the writing put me off in some places.

Pleasantly surprised by this book

If you could sum up City of Bones in three words, what would they be?

Gripping fantasy story

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite would be Jace, but then again - all characters are good and they make the story. Of course Jace is a favourite because he is who he is and the passion between Clary and Jace is part of the story and so captivating. I think that

What about Mae Whitman’s performance did you like?

She was a FABULOUS narrator. Great inflections and she really had the characters down. She painted a great picture and really had Jace’s accent and attitide down cold. I thoroughly enjoyed her as a Narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! And especially so as the Narrator really captured the writers imagination and one can listen to the story, and watch it play out in ones imagination with no attention on the narrator. The story was fast paced and exciting, with all sorts of things happening with each character as you get introduced to them all throughout the book. Her descriptions of the world that the Nephilim are a part of and how it fits in to the physical world that we know, were so real. I loved the book. And at the end I definitely wanted to get onto the next one.

Any additional comments?

Please keep the same narrator. It makes such a difference to the story.
I loved the book and a key part of listening is that you have no attention on the narrator.

Tinker Bell? Is that you?

I knew Mae's voice was familiar, Tinker Bell. It took me a bit to get used to it.

I actually read this book a few years ago and never made it to the second one. I decided I wanted to finish this series but didn't want to re-read this book so picked up the audio. Overall pretty good once I got passed the whole Tinker Bell thing, ha. I remembered a lot of it once it got going and it is a good story. I'm excited to read/listen to the rest of the series.

I haven’t read Book 1 in a decade. For what the characters become, they seem so childish in this book. (Which they are. Lol) The series is worth it though, so read on my friends.
