Acerca de esta escucha

Explore captivating Cherokee myths.

In Cherokee myth - as in other indigenous American traditions - the whole of creation is alive and able to communicate like humans and with the human beings who share their environment. Cherokee myths explain how the world came to be the way it is and imparts important lessons about Cherokee cultural values.

In the collection of stories retold in this volume, you will learn why the opossum has no fur on its tail, how the bat and the flying fox were created, and how medicine and disease came to afflict human beings. The misfortunes and desires of animals and birds become expressions of important Cherokee cultural values, such as modesty of speech, humility, and gratitude for the earth’s bounty. Like the human beings with whom they share their world, the animals and birds play stickball and hold dances, and they have councils in townhouses - communal spaces that were an important part of Cherokee settlements.

These stories are very old - passed down from generation to generation by storytellers who wished to instruct, entertain, and keep their traditions alive. They are part of a living tradition; the cultural fabric of an indigenous American people who have survived against terrible odds, continue to live according to their traditional values, and wish to create a better future for themselves and their children.

Within this audiobook, you'll find the following Cherokee myths and topics covered:

Though I'm not an official member of any tribe, I find the wisdom invaluable to learning about my ancestral family roots. I have cherokee blood in both sides of my family and have recently come into contact with my ancestors, who I believe have led me to this book for its lessons.

These are stories with lessons buried beneath the fiction. It is a fascinating look into Cherokee mythology and all of the stories have cores of truth that are universal to all who take the time to learn from them.

Thank you to the collector of these stories, if any more are uploaded, I will be a definite repeat listener.

Invaluable universal lessons for all who listen.

The narration was impeccable. The animals all have their stories and in the time before time could speak along with the plants.

As a person that grew up in what were formerly Cherokee lands, I’m somewhat familiar with the landscapes and animals in these tails. However, no other cultural places significance on the humble possum.

The way the Sun disdains the people, because they wrinkle their faces when they look at her, is so true to nature that is resonates to audiences far removed for the culture, helping the audience relate to how these people thought and felt.

I have enjoyed this book every time I've listened to it (which is many). I think it would be appreciated by most.

I had my DNA done on one of the services and it turns out I have Native American, which is probably Cherokee Indian blood. So this was a nice introduction into the mythology that surrounds the Cherokee nation. The only thing I’d like to say about the book is, I wish it was just a little longer and more in depth

I really enjoyed reading this book.

A very interesting book on Cherokee mythology

Only like 5 stories in here expected much more listening time. Narrators voice was flat and unexpressive

Disappointingly short
