About this listen

Listening to the Bible will change the way you understand scripture. The stories and poems and instructions comes in through the ears and consume your whole being as God's word becomes part of a living experience. The Common English Bible is not simply a revision or update of an existing translation. It is a bold new translation designed to meet the needs of Christians as they work to build a strong and meaningful relationship with God through Jesus Christ. A key goal of the translation team was to make the Bible accessible to a broad range of people; it’s written at a comfortable level for over half of all English speakers. As the translators did their work, specialists working with 77 reading groups from more than a dozen denominations reviewed the texts and read them aloud to ensure a smooth and natural listening experience. Easy readability can enhance church worship and participation, and personal Bible study. It also encourages children and youth to discover the Bible for themselves, perhaps for the very first time.

Who is it for? The Common English Bibleis committed to the whole church of Jesus Christ. To achieve this, the CEB represents the work of a diverse team with broad scholarship, including the work of over 120 scholars - men and women from 24 faith traditions in American, African, Asian, European, and Latino communities. As a result, the English translation of ancient words has an uncommon relevance for a broad audience of Bible readers - from children to scholars.

A great way to pray with the Psalms every day

Would you consider the audio edition of CEB Common English Bible Audio Edition with Music - Psalms to be better than the print version?

I enjoy the audio version because it makes it easy to pray with the Psalms every day. I find that the music background does enhance my listening experience for meditation and doesn't interfere with hearing the text. I find I can listen to the Psalms while driving, while waiting at the doctor's office, just before going to bed for the night, and when I first wake up. Since they are on my Audible app on my iPhone, they are always with me.

Any additional comments?

I have many translations of the Bible, but I really am enjoying the freshness of the Common English Bible. Some have commented that this translation is a paraphrase, but that isn't true. The translation was done by 120 scholars from the original sources. Many of us who have grown up with the BIble are used to the antiquated language of older translations and are uncomfortable with changes. When I have encountered a verse that seemed to stray from the more familiar language, I checked it out against original sources and found the translation to be accurate in every case. So I have learned to trust this translation and am enjoying the freshness and the accessibility that the Common English Bible offers. It has enhanced my experience of scripture, meditation, and prayer.
