About this listen

When a young man chooses a forbidden calling, he must prove his worth...or watch his kingdom fall.

Sixteen-year-old Augum Stone is a warlock prodigy suffocating under the weight of expectations. Students idolize him. Nobles plot to exploit him. Commoners think he's a miracle-maker. And with invasion looming, his already war-weakened kingdom expects him to be its champion. But Augum doesn't want to be a pawn in someone else's game. He'll forge his own path: that of the Arcaner - not a warlock or a knight, but a lethal combination of both.

Legend says Arcaners once had the power to summon dragons. If true, it could change everything. Resurrecting the Arcaner path comes with consequences, however. Scandal. Malice. Treachery. And a harrowing test of character. He must survive. He must prove he's worthy of an ancient path. And he must save the kingdom...before it's too late.

Good read

I like the story well enough. It didn't quite capture my imagination like the Arinthian Line series. I like the Arinthian Line narrator better.

All of a sudden all of the characters have completely changed in personality. The new narrator does this series more harm than good. Half the time its hard to tell if he is narrating one of the many female roles or the male roles. Terrible idea to change narrators, especially going as far as to change the nationality of the narrator making all of the characters sound like they decided to have an accent from Dublin after already publishing 5 books, all of which had no discernable accent.

Instantly sub par compared to The Arinthian Line

I found myself skipping portions of the book because the main character spends to much time lost in his own head. And in my opinion, hinders the story progression. Almost a 5 star book.

To much inner dialogue

This story was great! I was worried after reading the other reviews and the new narrator but the narrator isn’t bad, he’s just different. Pronounced words much differently but its easy to get used to. The plot itself is just as action packed, if not more, than the first series books! Definitely feels like the characters are older and facing a different set of challenges

Excellent Continuation

I think that 16 years old is too young to be asked to save the world. Yet Augeum does not break. Me? I would be weaving baskets and heavily medicated.
The glue that holds this 16 year old boy together is his friends.
It's a lot of situational emotional drama within the group of friends.
It turns out to be pretty darn good. My only problem was about half way through the author decided to call Augeum's girlfriend a nickname. Just out of the blue Lyra has now become Lee? Really tossed my salad for a few minutes.

Teen Aged drama

Most of the negative thoughts about the book revolve around the narrator. I thought he did a good job. The only issue for me was that some of the names / spells are pronounced differently than the first narrator.

Enjoyable!

While the new narrator is good, the inflection and characters voices are too similar. Will continue to listen however as I am thoroughly invested in this series.

Difference

To be honest I enjoyed the original 3 books immensely and the narrator did not disappoint. It is always annoying when narrators are changed midway through a series. My best advice is if you’re coming directly from the first series is to wait a few months because the transition to a new narrator won’t be as shocking. All and all the new narrator still did a good job and the book is well done and worth the listen.

If you loved the first series you'll love this one! Keep listening! The narrator is wonderful as well even though they have picked a new one for this series they chose appropriately and he does an excellent job!

Amazing Continuation!!
