In the story, a land owner named Vasili Andreevich Brekhunov takes along one of his peasants, Nikita, for a short journey to the house of the owner of a forest. He is impatient and wishes to get to the town more quickly to purchase the forest before other contenders can get there. They find themselves in the middle of a blizzard, but the master in his avarice wishes to press on. They eventually get lost off the road and they try to camp. The master's peasant soon finds himself suffering from hypothermia.

So glad I finally got to this classic!
I was hooked from the start! Great story and wonderful narration. Every age would enjoy this, especially if they love horse stories!

Dark and light
Black Beauty the book is NOT the story of the movie! It is far more textured, fluid and realistic rather than romantic. And the original Anna Sewell, of course. There are some grim dark times, and also warm light that comes through in the interactions and Black Beauty's views. The insights expressed from the horse's world view made me smile, and the perspectives on the human world touched me and made me laugh. Read with warmth and imagination, a gift of an audible book.
