About this listen

Chicago private eye V.I. Warshawski knows from the start that Consuelo Alvarado's baby is trouble. Consuelo is 16. Diabetic. And the daughter of a friend. When she goes into labor too early, even V. I.'s wild drive to get her to the hospital can't save either Consuelo or her child.

Soon V.I. is investigating possible malpractice at the emergency room - and falling for a doctor who works there. Mixing business and love is always bad medicine, but V.I. finds herself listening to her heart, not her head. And when a brutal murder and the violent destruction of a woman's clinic put her at the center of a very dirty conspiracy, justice may be the only remedy for a hurt that cuts deep...and chills right to the bone.

Critic reviews

"Paretsky is still the best....She doesn't pull punches." ( The Washington Post Book World)
"The plot [is] fast moving, the dialogue snappy, the premise for murder persuasive. This novel hasn't a single snag in its springs." ( Chicago Sun-Times)

Awesome as always!

I love V. I. 's dry sense of humor. I laugh out loud even alone!

Great Book!

Sara Paretsky can write! The storyline was phenomenal. I enjoyed every word of it! Susan Erickson is a great narrator. She draws you into Sara Paretsky’s stories like you were right there. I love the V.I. Warshaski stories very much. Always a new shift on a mystery.

Good storyline bad language

The storyline was interesting but the language was bad and got VERY bad on occasion. The storyline was good enough to carry on its on! I would not recommend this listen for everyone particularly not young children or even young teens or adults!

Bitter Medicine

Love the book!! And really love this narrator too!! She really gets into character and adds humor and suspense when required. The story was long but the complicated plot needed the time. Good one!!

An early look at V. I.

The influence of the times in which this book was written are well reflected in the story. The sarcastic wit of Vic is hard to listen to throughout an entire book. the later " alphabet" books that Paretsky wrote reflect a more mature detective and one you might enjoy knowing, more than this earlier version of an immature sarcastic feminist.

AN INTRIGUING TALE OF MEDICAL COVER-UP

What made the experience of listening to Bitter Medicine the most enjoyable?

The narrator was excellent. She made the listener part of the story.

What other book might you compare Bitter Medicine to and why?

Other V.I. Warshawsky books.

Have you listened to any of Susan Ericksen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Susan Ericksen always does a remarkable job. Whether she's reading J.D. Robb's Eve Dallas series or Sara Paretsky's stories, she makes the work interesting and engaging.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The dog - any heartstrings or tearjerk moment always seems to be about the dog. The poor thing knew his master was dead and just laid on the driveway next to the road.
