About this listen

Deadly secrets lie beneath the murky waters of the Louisiana bayou in this pulse-pounding new romantic suspense novel from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Karen Rose.

There’s no safe place for a child to hide when danger comes from every direction.

Public prosecutor J.P. “Kaj” Cardozo has only lived in New Orleans for six months, and he’s already working on a high-profile celebrity sexual assault case that’s made headlines all over the country. But when his son becomes the target of a kidnapping attempt as a threat to Kaj, he is desperate to keep him safe and turns to a private investigative firm famous for their protection services.

A veteran Marine, Val Sorensen is glad to have found a new career with Broussard Investigations. Her latest assignment as the bodyguard to ten-year-old Elijah Cardozo reminds her why—Val is a kick ass guardian with a tender heart. Through her duties, Val grows fond of the boy—and his handsome father.

But when the high-stakes investigation reveals an explosive network of crime through a revived drug gang, lingering deep-seated corruption in the NOPD, and a group of murderers-for-hire targeting Kaj, Elijah, and his star client, they’re all left scrambling for safety…

Critic reviews

"Lee Osorio brings his deep voice and its many variations to this long romantic suspense set in New Orleans and its environs. There are many characters in this audiobook.... Osorio's ability to use his voice to keep all the characters consistently separate and distinct, even the ones with lesser roles, is impressive. A diverse crew populates this audiobook, and Osorio's excellent performance captures them all." (AudioFile)

I absolutely loved this book. I feel like the last couple of Karen Rose offerings have been kind of...blah. They were either too politically influenced or just not that great story-wise. This book pulls me back into the feelings that I had the first time I read her Cincinnati or Baltimore series. The characters pull me in and remind me of plot points that were important in previous books, and the entire series still manages to connect all 28 books! I love it and will likely listen to it again.

I enjoy books by Karen Rose but this one was outstanding. I didn’t want to put it down to do other things that needed attention. I highly recommend.

Excellent

Both books in this series have been very good. The narrator could use some work with the female voices. The women mostly sound like men with a smokers cough. I get my image of characters from their voices and the female voices do not at all match the physical description. However this did not cancel out the benefits of an engaging plot with great plot twist, engaging characters, sweet kids and a dog, reprisals from book one, romance and a happily ever after. It took me a while to warm up to Kaj as he seemed to lack empathy for the abused kids. I really like Elijah. I hope that Fin gets his own story soon and Lucien too.

A winner

PLEASE have the narrator learn the proper pronunciation of names and places where the story takes place!

Fantastic listen! Karen Rose never lets me
down. Chalk up another winner. Lee Osorio is a splendid narrator. I am always happy when I see his name on one of Karen’s books.

This book reminds me of some of Karen's original books. I have read most of her books more than once as I enjoy them so much. I waited awhile before I bought it as I hadn't enjoyed her last books very much and it had so few ratings. I really like Lee Osorio's narration of the book. I would definitely recommend book two of this series to others but not book one.

Much better

Another excellent book by Karen Rose. She doesn’t disappoint. Her characters are strong and intelligent and her story line keeps you one the edge of your seat. Can’t wait for her next release.

Easy to follow narration with enough action to hold your attention. Good guys win which is what some of us prefer.
