About this listen

Battle Cry is the riveting Marine epic by the bestselling author of such classics as Trinity and Exodus

Originally published in 1953, Leon Uris’s Battle Cry is the raw and exciting story of men at war from a legendary American author. This is the story of enlisted men - Marines at the beginning of World War II. They are a rough-and-ready tangle of guys from America’s cities and farms and reservations. Led by a tough veteran sergeant, these soldiers band together to emerge as part of one of the most elite fighting forces in the world. With staggering realism and detail we follow them into intense battles - Guadalcanal and Tarawa - and through exceptional moments of camaraderie and bravery, Battle Cry does not extol the glories of war, but proves itself to be one of the greatest war stories of all time.

Not Uris most engaging writing

very good book, fantastic author but I think I expected too much, Trinity and The Haj are two of my all favorites. Battle Cry was very good, but not at the level of his others.

Wow. Just wow.

Wonderful book. Great story. I really felt for each of the characters. Proud as hell to call myself a US Marine.

One of my favorite books.

I read this book in high school and it sparked my love for reading. I didn't realize how well Uris captures the military experience until I recently listened to it. I finished the book and was moved to tears. The characters are well developed and you will grow to love them. Defiantly worth a listen/read.

An excellent story!

Mr. Lawler does an incredible job reading this book! His voice inflection and impersonations are spot on.

Great story

This book is on the Commandants Professional Reading List for a reason. It takes you through the lives of a relatable group of Marines from bootcamp to war and back home. There are many tragic things that happen and also many heartwarming things. Regardless of which it is the mission must come first, as it does.

All time favorite

Great story, particularly for those of us who are Marines. Much has changed in warfare, but there will always be a need for Marines.

Performance Great - Book Near Great

First, Patrick Lawlor did a great job performing this book. It seemed too slow at first, but once I upped the speed to 1.2, it was practically perfect. The book itself was very, very good. It was Uris’s first book: a lot of it was hilarious, some of it was touching. Maybe there were some structural issues and maybe a few parts were a little bit trite. Overall, I would say it’s the best look I’ve ever had into the WW2 Marine boot training program, which takes up roughly half the book. Then the Marines wait to be sent into battle, then they battle, then they do those things again. Through that process, they become a tightly knit team. That whole thing is fascinating to watch. Highly recommended!
