Publisher's summary

Mornings with Schleiermacher is an introduction to the life and thoughts of the man who became known as the Father of Modern Theology. It is a volume you can explore, enjoy, and interact with as you familiarize yourself with Friedrich Schleiermacher's big ideas. At its core, Mornings is a devotional for personal reflection. But it is also a work that provides multiple pathways toward spiritual growth through daily readings, biography, and the reproduction of Schleiermacher's classic, The Monologen.

A shoddy treatment of an important theologian

The title of this book is misleading. It promises a healthy dose of Schleiermacher, but it actually consists of Chad Bahl's odd musings about lines he has lifted from Schleiermacher's writings. The result is unfortunate: a third rate mind making a mess of a first rate mind. Bahl's reflections on Schleiermacher are idiosyncratic and a tad juvenile; his ramblings often seem untethered from the point that Schleiermacher is actually making. Consequently they fail to do justice to Schleiermacher's profundity.

I fell prey to purchasing this audiobook both because I appreciate Schleiermacher and because the reviews were positive. But the reviews were written by well-meaning readers/listeners who have little to no acquaintance with Schleiermacher, and so do not realize how much Schleiermacher's genius has been trivialized by Mr. Bahl. If you want to expose yourself to a great religious spirit, I'm afraid this book will not facilitate that encounter.
