About this listen

From National Book Award finalist Randy Ribay comes a gripping new chapter—starring Avatar Roku—in the New York Times bestselling Chronicles of the Avatar series, set in the world of Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

A young Avatar Roku has only just commenced his training at the Southern Air Temple when his erstwhile friend, Prince Sozin, requests his aid in preventing the Earth Kingdom from claiming a remote Fire Nation island. Despite his inexperience, Avatar Roku slips away with the help of an irritating young Airbender named Gyatso. As the reluctant companions delve deeper into their wayward mission, they begin to realize that even greater threats lie ahead. Plagued by self-doubt but eager to prove himself, Roku fights for his life and the lives of others while ensuring that the hidden secret of the island doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

This searing fifth installment in the Chronicles of the Avatar series explores the beginning of Roku’s journey from privileged Fire Nation noble to the powerful but indecisive Avatar whose hesitancy may ultimately pave the way for the Hundred Year War.

Appreciated depth to beloved characters

I do wish it was longer, or had more meat. Though it felt like a complete story with fantastic character and plot development that leave you wanting more.

Great addition to the Series

I was a big fan of the Kyoshi and Yangchen novels. This book takes the energy previously built and adds to the world of Avatar in the author's own style. An excellent performance and very enjoyable narrative I look forward to seeing what this author decides to do in the future with Avatar Roku as he grows in power and experience.

More Roku please!

Enjoyed this new addition to the ATLA verse. Don’t get me wrong I can nitpick at some mentions to lore not discovered until Avatar Korra but that’s no reason to not enjoy this story.

Amazing storyline

I love F.C. Yee’s previous books and I’m happy this author got the chance to join the Avatar universe. I cannot wait to read more! The best part to me is learning more about Roku and Sozin’s difficult relationship.

Fire!!

This book, hoping it’s the first of many of Roku or at least one of two, was absolute fire. Loved every part of it. I yearn for more in this universe. Thank you!

An insightful new exploration of Sozin’s and Roku’s friendship

The story brings back the fun adventure of the original Kyoshi books with a new kingdom’s politics to consider. This is certainly not the overly political Yang Chen series, and brings more action and sincere interpersonal conflicts. We get to see an avatar that struggles to let go of their home nation and the consequences that it brings. Great new start and I really hope to hear more from Roku. I would love to read about his and Sozin’s conflict over the first earth kingdom fire nation colony.
