clear, informative, reasonable, excellent

The reader gets a good overview (although I would assume at a pretty basic level), of where artificial intelligence and machine learning are positioned at present. The book is neither too easy not too hard. On the whole, hers is a sensible and somewhat deflationary (compared to many popular accounts) account of the powers of artificial intelligence and machine learning now and in the foreseeable future.

Strong overview of the conceptual state of AI

This is a quick introduction into how modern AI systems work, along with some extended discussion around the philosophy of said systems. I was working on something that is incorporating AI and it's exactly what I needed for me to wrap my head around how the systems work and what their strengths and limitations are.

An added benefit is that I can confidently say to my wife that we are in no danger of artificial intelligence having human level thoughts and feelings at any time in the near future.

Great History and Update on AI

I love this book it is both substantial, but not overly technical. It really caught me up on what has happened in the last 40 years since I majored in computer science.

Great Read

Well informed and dives deep into technical areas without alienating the laity (like myself). If you want to know more about AI this is a great start. As relevant at the time of this review (2023) as it was at publication.

Other reviews have said the narrator was robotic but I didn’t find that to be the case. You can always sample before you buy if that’s an issue for you.

Loved it.

Makes you feel that it isn’t too late to join the field. Catches reader up to speed on ai development with very little groundless embellishment. Melanie Mitchell is the best.

Great content

Thought the whole thing was very well done. I’m not gonna say it passed the Turing Test with my family though...that narrator had to have been an AI.

Read the book, spare yourself from a dead-end.

If you're a python developer and find yourself working almost entirely with vectors and matrices, read this book and spare yourself from a professional dead-end. Goes nicely with Rebooting AI by Marcus & Davis.

Now to tackle GEB...

Great primer on AI

I recommend this audiobook as a very good primer on AI. It lays great groundwork & initial research to better understand AI, it’s origins, the community of researchers & developers, it’s current states & future potential. I write this in 2023, while this book was published in 2019. Already, many of the predictions made in this book are interesting (now) myopic & smile inducing. I only give this four stars overall b/c I am not in love with this book as I am with my truly loved favorites.

Best Book so far on the subject (my opinion)

As a quick reference I am comparing this book mainly to "The Coming Wave" by Mustafa Suleyman and "AI Superpowers" by Kai Fu Lee. This audiobook gives a very detailed overview of the actual programming and logic involved in AI. I am not entirely interested in this aspect of AI but was amazed at how interesting I found it. If you're not a techno geek I would advise listening anyway. The author explains it in very easy to understand terms. If you are going to get the big picture I think it gives one an enormous benefit to understand the inner workings of AI. She also gives a very concise history and of course covers the questions so may people are concerned with: will AI take over the world? etc. Her real world view of what AI is not and what it CANT do is actually quite comforting if you are wondering about the moral issues and so on. This is the most informative book, print or audio, that I have read so far. The tedious explanations of logic all culminate in important points. It's not something you will want to fast forward thru. Excellent Book!

Very helpful presentation about the history and future of AI.

I liked the chronological overview of AI from the 1950's through today and the predictions of future development and usage of AI. I also enjoyed learning about the people, universities and companies that have been involved in AI. This book is a good starting point for anyone considering a career or investing in AI.
