About this listen

Arrangements in Blue elegantly honors the life lived completely by—and for—oneself. Inspired by Joni Mitchell’s seminal album Blue, celebrated British poet Amy Key sets out to examine the volatile scales of romantic feeling as she has encountered them: from the low notes of loss and unfulfilled desire—punctuated by sharp, discordant feelings of jealousy and regret—to the deep harmony of friendship and the highs defined by sexual attraction and self-realization. Key celebrates the bliss of sleeping in an empty bed, the intimate energy required for cooking solo, and the transformative power of traveling alone—especially to the sea. Written with the exquisite finesse of a poet, this bold manual for navigating life alone provides an alternative perspective on a shared human experience so rarely explored.

Terrible narrator but good message

So I did like the book. It talks of loneliness and want of romance. But she goes on and on and it kind of ends up going nowhere. Her voice is not made for audiobooks. I had to increase the speed to 1.2 then 1.5x speed to even get through it. She speaks so slowly and pauses so much that it is unbearable. Buy/rent the book and read it in print. Don’t listen to it.

Not what I expected but good

Many things to like about this book in which the author discusses the lack of romantic love in her life for the past several decades.
The author is a poet as is evidenced by her beautiful use of language.
Her voice is pleasant to listen to
She doesn’t come to a definitive conclusion about her life at the end, which I like because life doesn’t usually wrap itself up that neatly.

If you pick up this looking for a lot of information or analogies, Joni Mitchell, you may be disappointed. Joanie is definitely in there, and the author does make parallels, but not as many as you might think.
I also think the book could have been a little shorter.
A kick ass 3 hour essay. The author is looking at her life and singleness from so many different angles it can go on a bit.

This book would be good to listen to maybe 1 chapter per week.
Overall a good book.
