About this listen
The key to effective church leadership is the ability to be a nonanxious presence. This is not a technique; it is a way of being. It is deceptively simple, but tremendously difficult. Yet, if you are willing to take the journey, you can lead change in even the most challenging contexts.
Listen to this audiobook and you will understand:
- The process that keeps churches anxious and stuck.
- How leadership through self-differentiation gets churches unstuck.
- How to develop as a nonanxious presence so you can lead change anywhere, but especially in an anxious church.
Anxious Church, Anxious People is based on a family systems approach to congregational leadership. It is for church leaders who are willing to learn more about themselves and their family of origin so they can be a nonanxious presence. It will resonate with those who have tried everything else and realize they cannot change others but can only change themselves. It makes family systems concepts accessible and practical through the use of examples from personal experience.
The author has used this approach to leadership in his 26 years of ministry as a pastor, board chair, and ministry executive. It has enabled him to lead significant change in the local church, a regional ministry, and a denominational professional association. He has been teaching, mentoring, and coaching congregational leaders for the last 15 years to help them to do the same.
Reviews of Anxious Church, Anxious People:
"Anxious Church, Anxious People is a marvelously insightful guide for how to use a systems approach in church leadership situations. It guides leaders in practical ways through difficult situations, and it helps the reader understand the dynamics behind interpersonal challenges in the parish. I have seen the change Rev. Shitama has led. The experience he shares can help any leader." (Bishop Peggy A. Johnson, Philadelphia Episcopal Area - The United Methodist Church)
"This is an excellent resource for pastors and others who aspire to leadership in the church. In fact, this is the book I wish I'd written and will use it when I teach leadership. 'Anxiety' is the issue for us, and the angel said, 'Fear not.'" (David McAllister-Wilson, president, Wesley Theological Seminary)
"Through Jack's self-revealing, modest way and his accessible language, you can get a clearer picture as to how to integrate Family Systems thinking into your life. If you have heard about Family Systems and want to get in touch with this powerful language of leadership, I suggest you consider this book to start the "process.'" (Rev. William Selby, president/mentor, Center for Pastoral Effectiveness of the Rockies, Highlands Ranch, CO)

Story
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Story
Spiritual director and psychologist David Benner invites us to discover openness to God as the essence of prayer, spirituality, and the Christian life. Prayer is far more than saying words to God; all of life can be prayer when offered to God in faith and with openness. Using the four movements of lectio divina, Benner explores prayer as attending, pondering, responding, and being. Along the way he opens us to a world of possibilities for communion with God: praying with our senses, with imagination, with music and creativity, in contemplation, in service, and much more.

This mystical aspect of the black church is deeply implicated in the wellbeing of African American people but is not the focus of their intentional reflection. Moreover, its traditions are deeply ensconced within the historical memory of wider society and can be found in Coltrane's riffs, Malcolm's exhortations, the Black Lives Matter Movement and the presidency of Barack Hussein Obama.

Is it possible to disagree politically and love unconditionally? The reaction of evangelicals to political and cultural shifts in recent years revealed what they value most. Lurking beneath our Bible-laced rhetoric, faith claims, books, and sermons is a relentless drive to WIN! But the church is not here to win. By every human measure, our Savior lost. On purpose. With a purpose. And we are his body. We are not in it to win anything. We are in it for something else entirely. That something else is what this book is about.

"Anger is a signal and one worth listening to," writes Dr. Harriet Lerner in her renowned classic that has transformed the lives of millions. While anger deserves our attention and respect, women still learn to silence our anger, to deny it entirely, or to vent it in a way that leaves us feeling helpless and powerless. In this engaging and eminently wise book, Dr. Lerner teaches both women and men to identify the true sources of anger and to use it as a powerful vehicle for creating lasting change.

In fact, sometimes it seems like they’re on a mission to make us miserable! There’s always that one person. The one who hijacks our emotions. The one who seems to thrive on drama. If we could just “fix” that person, everything would be better. But we can’t fix other people. We can only make choices about ourselves.

It’s a great introduction to systems theory applied to church. Excellent for the uninitiated. But if you have fluency around systems and groups this will be in-nuanced.
Lots of important and repeated terms. Self differentiation. Triangles. Process vs content (which isn’t a systems concept), really important. But again lose clarity when stated without explanation.
