About this listen

New adventures lie ahead as Anne Shirley packs her bags, waves good-bye to childhood, and heads for Redmond College. With old friend Prissy Grant waiting in the bustling city of Kingsport and frivolous new pal Philippa Gordon at her side, Anne tucks her memories of rural Avonlea away and discovers life on her own terms, filled with surprises...including a marriage proposal from the worst fellow imaginable, the sale of her very first story, and a tragedy that teaches her a painful lesson.

But tears turn to laughter when Anne and her friends move into an old cottage and an ornery black cat steals her heart. Little does Anne know that handsome Gilbert Blythe wants to win her heart, too. Suddenly, Anne must decide if she's ready for love.

Critic reviews

"The most moving and delightful child of fiction since the immortal Alice." (Mark Twain)
"Fifty years after her death, her work surfaces regularly in new guises....There's no cool modern cynicism here; these stories are decidedly old-fashioned and determinedly upbeat." ( Calgary Herald)

Fabulous read but poor narrator.

I love Anne, always have so the story is overall very good but this narrator drives me bonkers with her breathy Marilyn Monroe inspired voice for Anne. Anne is fiery yet compassionate and that should be reflected in the narration.

sweet telling of Anne's college years

the story was good, but the reader had an odd fake southern accent she used on some of the characters

Anne is Independent

Would you consider the audio edition of Anne of the Island to be better than the print version?

No, although I love audio books because they allow me to "read" while traveling, the print version lets your imagination run wild. And I didn't like how the narrator had Annes voice be dreamy throughout the entire story instead of when it was appropriate.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Anne of the Island?

When the girls actually obtained "Patty's Place"

Any additional comments?

Wonderful to see Anne exploring the world! The only book where she is truly independent and free.

Love every minute.

This has always been a favorite story of mine. Since I was a kid I remember sitting in the living room with my mother watching these movies over and over again reading the book, no matter how different it was from the movie still warmed my heart and brought back memories of my childhood.

Warm childhood memories in classic tale.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I have always loved the Anne of Green Gables series. I remember reading them aloud to my sister when we were both young. This book has the poignant love story as Anne grows up. It is sweet, very sad one point and yet full of laughs all the way through.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It is hard to choose between Anne and Marilla. Anne is so full of high ideals and dreams, but is always being forced to face reality and the problems of life. She does it as any real person would with fits of temper, tears.

Marilla, on the other hand, shares wisdom, with very few displays of emotion. She tends to keep her feelings, bottled up inside herself. Something I would love to be able to do most of the time.

Would you be willing to try another one of Renee Raudman’s performances?

I might try her once more, but I prefer other people who have narrated some of these books. She doesn't put as much life into the characters.

Was Anne of the Island worth the listening time?

Yes, any book by Lucy Maude Montgomery is well worth taking the time to listen too.

Great book, awful reader

I love this book but the reader must know nothing about Canada. She did some awful accents for some of the people, a sort of cross between a southern accent and a bad french accent. I had to turn it down just to get through those bits. Does not sound like anyone I have ever heard from P.E.I. or Nova Scotia.
