About this listen

In her fifth outing, Maisie Dobbs, the extraordinary Psychologist and Investigator, delves into a strange series of crimes in a small rural community

With the country in the grip of economic malaise, and worried about her business, Maisie Dobbs is relieved to accept an apparently straightforward assignment from an old friend to investigate certain matters concerning a potential land purchase. Her inquiries take her to a picturesque village in Kent during the hop-picking season, but beneath its pastoral surface she finds evidence that something is amiss. Mysterious fires erupt in the village with alarming regularity, and a series of petty crimes suggests a darker criminal element at work.

As Maisie discovers, the villagers are bitterly prejudiced against outsiders who flock to Kent at harvest time—even more troubling, they seem possessed by the legacy of a wartime Zeppelin raid. Maisie grows increasingly suspicious of a peculiar secrecy that shrouds the village, and ultimately she must draw on all her finely honed skills of detection to solve one of her most intriguing cases.

Rich with Jacqueline Winspear's trademark period detail, this installment of the bestselling series, An Incomplete Revenge, is gripping, atmospheric, and utterly enthralling.

Critic reviews

“Jacqueline Winspear adds a fascinating episode to the Maisie Dobbs series, which justly gains fans with each new story. Orlagh Cassidy began the audio series with PARDONABLE LIES and continues her appealing portraits of the characters. She smoothly, and quite elegantly, delivers a variety of accents of the Kent countryside gentry and townsfolk...Cassidy nicely conveys Maisie's honest wisdom, sensible approach to her "inquiries," and spirited manners. The details of village life, a community of Gypsies, and the shifts in attitudes of the late 1920s make a vivid audio mystery.” —AudioFile, Earphones Award Winner

“Jacqueline Winspear's An Incomplete Revenge is an excellent option for a long car trip involving older kids, parents and grandparents. Read with zest by Orlagh Cassidy...” —USA Today

“This series is outstanding in atmosphere, characters, dialogue, sense of place and time; and Cassidy's narration is nothing short of equally outstanding, as she demonstrates her facile skills with the many accents, tones, and emotions Winspear demands of her. One of the best mystery series around.” —KLIATT

Completely Pertinent Today

They say that Trees in a forest are connected in ways we humans don't detect. Is it possible that connection lives on in books and humans, by the spores of the paper coming from that forest? I fee this book so keenly, speaking to me about prejudice and world hate today. Wow, I did not expect this. I'm so glad I came back to this series.

It's 1931 in the series

I haven't found the first five books in the Maisie Dobbs series terribly exciting but there is a certain something that keeps you coming back. When I figure out what it is I'll put it in a review as I do plan to continue on.

In this book, Maisie goes out to rural England to evaluate this village to see if something is amiss as she is hired to check it out before James Compton decides to buy it for the family business. Maisie gets there and finds secrets that need uncovering and begins to weave her way through the mystery figuring it all out. It picks up steam towards the end and all in all was an enjoyable listen.

One of the things that makes the books interesting is the description of life in England during this time. Between the two wars, jobs scarce as a worldwide depression was ongoing, and many people struggling to just make ends meet. I'm an American of English descent and I sometimes wonder what made my ancestor way back when decide to make the move to the colonies. One thing for sure, I would have never liked the class system.

Incomplete revenge

I didn’t enjoy this story as much as I have the previous ones in this series. I’m going to continue on and look forward to this next book being more to my liking.

Loved it

If you have seen any of my other reviews for Maisie Dobbs books you know I adore them. This particular book has a very intriguing mystery and some interesting personal development for Maise herself. An excellent addition to the series! Orlagh Cassidy is wonderful as the various characters.

An Incomplete Revenge

I have enjoyed these stories so much but at times I am not sure my heart can continue to take it!

The heartbreak of discovery and remembrance. A good mystery and again ties to the war. Laying Simon to rest was another wound but also a road to healing.

I just want some happiness!

Don't read this review! Go buy this series!

I cannot overemphasize how fascinating and well-written these books are. I've read several of these "English" mystery series and this one is by far the best.
The series is well-researched, the stories are exciting, and delving into these characters has been a wonderful experience.
Please read these books. They will not disappoint.
