About this listen
Are you living above your circumstances, or are you crushed beneath their weight? Curt Ghormley was ambushed by AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) and determined to meet it with optimism, humor, and steely grit. Drawing on Christian principles and the memoir of his own life experiences, he teases out the lessons for dealing effectively with an unexpected and deadly fight with an unseen enemy. In this book, he presents eight rules for living victoriously in the shadow of the medical death sentence of a fast-moving cancer.
In between your tears, this book is laugh-out-loud funny!
Don’t miss the war stories. Ghormley is a history buff and liberally illustrates his subject with World War II experiences from his own father in the US Navy, and those of others. At once light-hearted, uplifting, biblical, poignant, and heart-wrenching, this is the one book sure to bring bright hope to a dark room. With a clear-eyed acknowledgment of the reality and seriousness of events beyond our control, Ghormley shows the way to meet the most difficult challenges of life head-on.

Marriage, movies, and miracles. Oh, my! Marriage is a dance (even when you step on each other's toes), and movies are minefields of problems and politics, but miracles are more common than you might believe. Kevin and Sam show that if you keep your feet moving and your hearts focused on God's divine rhythm, you can discover successes you might never imagine. All it takes is a little faith. Throughout True Faith, the Sorbos personify this verse as they embrace the struggles they meet and use their faith to bolster their responses.

Yet even as he tried to give patients hope, his own heart would sink as he realized, I've seen the end of you. But it became far more personal when the acclaimed doctor experienced an unimaginable family tragedy. That's when he reached the end of himself. Gripping medical stories serve as the backdrop for a raw, honest look at how we can remain on solid ground when everything goes wrong.

Story
You Are Worth It is a memoir about the War in Afghanistan and Kyle’s heroics, yes, but it also is a manual for living. Organized around the credos that have guided Kyle’s life (from “Don’t Hide Your Scars” to “Call Your Mom”), the book encourages us to become our best selves in the time we've been given on earth.

Story
Dr. Steven Hatch first came to Liberia in November 2013 to work at a hospital in Monrovia. Six months later, several of the physicians Dr. Hatch had mentored and served with were dead or barely clinging to life, and Ebola had become a world health emergency. Hundreds of victims perished each week; whole families were destroyed in a matter of days; so many died so quickly that the culturally taboo practice of cremation had to be instituted to dispose of the bodies.

Faculty raved about the group as though the residency program had won the lottery, nicknaming them “The Golden Class”, but would Stern ever prove that he belonged? In his memoir, Stern pulls back the curtain on the intense and emotionally challenging lessons he and his fellow doctors learned.

Story
In November 2014, 13 members of the Biden family gathered on Nantucket for Thanksgiving, a tradition they had been celebrating for the past 40 years; it was the one constant in what had become a hectic, scrutinized, and overscheduled life. But this year felt different from all those that had come before.

Highly Recommend Audio Version of this Book!
Having read both the physical and audio versions, I can say that listening to the author’s narration makes for an even more memorable and (despite his best efforts to the contrary) emotional journey.
The rare narrative structure of war story, biblical application, and personal vignette work together in a truly one of a kind way that really hits home throughout.
