Our mission was to keep the enemy from capturing the cities of Da Nang, Tam Ky, and Chu Lai and to pacify the area. We did prevent the enemy from capturing these vital cities, but the area was far from pacified.

LRPs were all volunteers. They were in the spine-tingling, brain-twisting, nerve-wracking business of Long Range Patrolling. They varied in age from eighteen to thirty. These men operated in precision movements, like walking through a jungle quietly and being able to tell whether a man or an animal is moving through the brush without seeing the cause of movement. They could sit in an ambush for hours without moving a muscle except to ease the safety off the automatic weapon in their hand at the first sign of trouble. This book is the most accurate I’ve listened to regarding the Vietnam War. This is what it was like as a grunt in Vietnam. I served in 1/506 Infantry, 101 st. Abn. Div. in the mountain jungles and lowlands of I Corp Vietnam.

Virtual Voice needs some work
One of the best tellings of what it’s like to be a combat infantrymen at war. The book is so good it overcame the poor quality AI rendition. Hopefully, the book will be presented using a qualified human narrator.

Great book but terrible narration
This is the best account of the Vietnam experience that I have read. It is particularly good because it traces the writer’s opinions and how they change as he goes through his tour. In particular the anti war movement and the criticism of the government is not common in the biographies and autobiographies I have read. However the AI narration was monocratic and devoid of emotion — mis- pronunciations - it would have 5 stars had it not been for the narration.

Great soldier's story.

Great Story
The story was gripping and put you in the jungle with the Grunts. No sugar coating just raw fear and survival. The AI narration was an abomination just terrible. Clearly not narrated by a person. The narration went in and out and skipped some words. Use a real person next time.

Respect
So much respect for the comeback veterans. Brooke does a great job painting the picture of the range of emotions and experiences of those warriors on the front line of Vietnam. Would love better narration, AI has come a long way but still isn’t a human.
