Historia
During the Vietnam War, a “secret war” was fought across the fence in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam, unknown to the media or the public, under the aegis of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam’s top secret Studies and Observations Group. SOG’s chain of command for missions and after-action reports extended to the White House and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Call Sign Dracula provides a valuable and worthy in-depth look into the life of a US Army Infantry soldier serving with the famed 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) in Vietnam. It is a genuine, firsthand account of a one-year tour that shows how a soldier grew and matured from an awkward, bewildered, inexperienced, 18-year-old country bumpkin from Kentucky, to a tough, battle-hardened fighting soldier.

THE SCREAMING EAGLES IN VIETNAM 1970: the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne have been in combat against the elusive Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army for nearly five years. In this memoir, author John G. Roberts tells the story of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, the "Widow Makers" of the 101st Divisions' 1st Brigade. Written in the often crude language of the combat infantryman, Roberts describes what it was like to confront the enemy during close combat in the triple-canopied jungles of I Corps, west of the Song Bo River. John Launer, a United States Army Combat Infantryman in the Vietnam War, details his horrific experiences during that time. Setting the record straight that soldiers were not drug addicts, murderers, and baby killers, Launer documents that American media bias led to the public misunderstanding of the war. The action within is violent, bloody, and never ending, leading many veterans to devastating physical and psychological trauma upon their return home to the USA.

1st Lieutenant Robin Bartlett suddenly found himself at the "repo-depo" in Bien Hoa reassigned to the 1st Cavalry Division. The unit had more helicopter support than any other unit in Vietnam. Immediate support from artillery, helicopter gunships, and ARA was only minutes away to support a firefight. Wounded troops could be medevaced even in dense jungle using "jungle penetrators." It also meant that Bartlett's platoon could deploy through helicopter combat assaults into hot LZs (landing zones) at a moment's notice if an enemy force had been spotted. And they did.

Historia
Things I’ll Never Forget is the story of a young high school graduate in 1965 who faces being drafted into the Army or volunteering for the Marine Corps. These are his memories of funny times, disgusting times and deadly times. The author kept a journal for an entire year; therefore many of the dates, times and places are accurate. The rest is based on memories that are forever tattooed on his brain. This is not a pro-war book, nor is it anti-war. It is the true story of what the Marine Corps was like in the late 1960’s.

On October 19, 1965, American Special Forces in Vietnam came under attack at their camp at Plei Me. This marked the first major confrontation between the North Vietnamese and US armies during the war. Throughout six days of constant hostile fire, Captain Lanny Hunter sorted the seriously wounded from the dead and saved those comrades-in-arms he could. For his actions, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. In Exit Wounds, Hunter recalls his tour in the central highlands of Vietnam in 1965/66 at the bloody interface of medicine and combat.

A young US Marine officer recounts his experiences of the Vietnam War over a 19-month period. He graphically describes what it was like to perform three distinct combat missions: long-range ground reconnaissance in the Annamite Mountains of I Corps, infantry operations in the rice paddies and mountains of Quang Nam Province, and special police operations for the CIA in Tay Ninh province. Using official Marine Corps unit histories, CIA documents, and his weekly letters home, the author relies almost exclusively on primary sources in providing an accurate and honest account.

While most of us are familiar with the Underground Railroad, there was much more to the movement than helping individuals escape their bondage. In the eight lectures of The Abolitionists, Professor Kellie Carter Jackson of Wellesley College will bring you along as she traces the history of the fight to end slavery in America, from its relatively quiet origins to the turning point at Harper’s Ferry to the Civil War.

Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

LRPs were all volunteers. They were in the spine-tingling, brain-twisting, nerve-wracking business of Long Range Patrolling. They varied in age from eighteen to thirty. These men operated in precision movements, like walking through a jungle quietly and being able to tell whether a man or an animal is moving through the brush without seeing the cause of movement. They could sit in an ambush for hours without moving a muscle except to ease the safety off the automatic weapon in their hand at the first sign of trouble. These men were good because they had to be to survive.

The Marines of First Reconnaissance Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel "Wild Bill" Drumright, were assigned to cover the withdrawal of First Marine Division. The Marines of First RECON Bn operated in teams of six or seven men. Heavily armed, the teams fought a multitude of bitter engagements with a numerically superior and increasingly aggressive enemy. As part of Operation Texas Star, the 502nd ...

In the Vietnam War, American "rough riders" drove trucks through hostile territory delivering supplies, equipment, ammunition, weapons, fuel, and reinforcements to troops fighting on the war's ever-shifting front lines. His battalion was one of the most decorated units of the Vietnam War, and helped redefine modern warfare. In harrowing detail, he tells of being shot down in the battle of A Shau Valley, of surviving enemy attacks during the Tet Offensive, and of a death-defying nighttime river rescue.

excellent, no frills description of actual military events
I liked everything about the actual book, well-written, clean prose, very detailed, incredibly engage and propulsive.
I dislike the virtual voice narration because it is incapable of many basic speaking skills. It struggled with the numerical names of military groups, made weird pauses after every period -- even the ones in military titles like Lt. There were other smaller issues as well, but they didn't affect the comprehension of the content nearly as much.

Dont be put off by the clumsy title and "virtual voice" narration, if you are interested in lrrps or the Vietnam war in general, you'll love this book. Honestly the artificial voice acting is pretty impressive, outside of a few brief moments it sounds perfectly fine

AI Narrator
The story is a familiar one, and I enjoy hearing the background and exploits of the Vietnam War and the brave soldiers who actively participated in the fight. That said, the AI narrator is a sad example of failure to provide the story the respect it deserves with a human reading it. Mispronunciations, inaccurate sentence translation (stopping as if a complete sentence after an abbreviation, i.e. “Col. Smith”), mixing military abbreviations and literal spellings (145th Arty pronounced as one four five tee aytch arty) etc, etc were obvious and repeated throughout the book. My suggestion would be to find a few VFW lodges and get some narrators who would very likely do it for free.

Clearly describes life in an LRRP unit
I felt that this book gave a "good" description of life in an LRRP unit. Not great but nothing annoying about it, either.
I think that was due to the writing being a bit bland, not the story, per se.
Yes, it's narrated by Virtual Voice, but I was surprised how good VV was. I was very surprised how human and realistic it sounds. Again, it's not great and doesn't know when to give emotion or intonation, but it's not bad either. I can think of *certain human narrators* would I would love to see replaced by Virtual Voice. VV doesn't make the faux pas that you would expect (e.g. knowing which of the various ways to pronounce the word 'read') but you could tell when edits had been spliced in, so maybe they were corrections of such instances. Which is odd... why can we tell when they splice in a fix? Talking of odd things and realism, you can even hear when Virtual Voice turns the page! Hey... think about that...
So anyway, if you'd like to learn more about the LRRPs in Vietnam, this is definitely worth your time.

Eye opening sorry, unfortunately read by AI.
Very informative story. Unfortunately having this read by AI, messing up simple words… messing up on normal inflections…. if you know what AI meant to say, you will be rolling your eyes too many times, to pay attention to what’s being said. If you don’t know what it meant to say, you’ll be trying to figure out what it meant, too often to be paying attention to the story.
