This is for Kindle Version ASIN: B008RD2W58. And the Audible version.

Yeah.

Before I got mired down in the mystery and ghostly farts of Temple Secrets, I finished reading Dark Currents. I bought the Kindle and Audible versions a long time ago (a year, I think). I finally got into it, Friday, I think. It seems so long ago. Wish I would have remembered to write the review right after, but something happened and I only just saw that I hadn't given this book it's due.

First of all, I love Jacqueline Carey's writing. I read almost all her stuff a while back. I still love her Kushiel's Legacy series the best. This is a little different in that it is more on the lines of the demony-werewolfie stuff I have been reading a lot lately (wave to Sara Reine). Still Ms. Carey had a new take on the genre. I loved her characters and world. It all seemed believable, well, sort of.

Second, the narrator, Johanna Parker, was fantastic! She could change her voice according to character or mood and keep the story moving.

Oh and a note about the cat. Geeze, now I can't remember his name. He was adorably real among all the werewolves, mermaids and other fantasy beings. As tense as the story got sometimes, Ms. Carey kept the banter light enough to not get to be too much.

There is a bit of romance but not sickeningly so. Mostly it is about Daisy, the half-demon, Hel's agent (the goddess not the place), trying to live a useful life in this town full of fantasy creatures. And she and her partner have to solve a murder. Difficult enough with merely humans involved, but how did the boy die in salt water in Lake Michigan, fresh water?

Though the book didn't leave us on a cliffhanger, I find myself wanting to enjoy the characters and the town more. So Now that I have my free credit on Audible I will download that version and buy the Kindle version when I get paid. I look forward to more.

Love Jacqueline Carey!

Daisy deals with well thought temptations and where Phedra leaned in, Daisy holds fast to what she feels is safer. (If you haven't read Kushiel's Dart - do it. it changed my life knowing I wasn't alone.)
I finished this audio book in less than a week and I'm about to get the next book.... I should he sleeping, but a good story usually wins in my world.

like remeeting Phedra, but more hell predisposed

J. Carey is a wonderful author! It was fun to see her try her hand at angsty young adult fantasy set in the "now", with her characteristic flair of in-depth character development and suspension of belief to allow for out-of-the-ordinary to walk right next to mundane.
Well read and approachable, a very easy read/listen in a new world that I will happily revisit!

well read, well written, Y.A.

This is my first book written by Jacqueline Carey. I enjoyed it immensely. The characters feel real and engaging. The interactions between the characters are realistic and genuine. I love the world created and how it includes the paranormal. Daisy's struggle with her own relationship with the paranormal is unique and creative. Daisy is a great character and I look forward to reading about her next adventure. Johanna Parker narrates the book we'll. She gives the characters a voice and helps to bring the book alive. Over-all this is a great listening experience.

I have been waiting on the price of this book to go down for a while and I finally got it on sale. It was a decent story and kept me entertained.

The story line and plot are interesting and there were some twists and turns that kept me guessing. I liked the concept of this series, but it didn't make me want to rush out and get the next book in the series.

As for the narration, I do like Johanna Parker so it was a good narration. She has a nice southern voice that doesn't get on your nerves.

Decent story, good narration.

Her mother lives in a mobile home park on the edge of town, her father was a lesser demon of Hell and occasional incubus. Daisy works as a part time file clerk at the local police office and as the liaison between the mundane world and the goddess Hel who is the local supernatural in charge. A young college student is found drowned and all of the signs indicate that this is not an ordinary accidental drowning.

Not as dark and angsty as some of her high fantasy novels, this is still an entertaining read. I like Daisy's relationship with her best friend, Jen, and how she was willing to try to repair it after she causes a breach. She also has a good relationship with her mother and her old baby sitter. Daisy is not just a smart-assed hellspawn-- although she does have a tail.

i noticed that someone objected to what they thought was Johanna Parker's southern accent. I have a fair ear for accents and I didn't think she was using an obvious southern overlay. After all a midwestern accent is frequently considered received pronunciation in the US.

Pretty enjoyable listen.

Entertaining Urban Fantasy

The story is fun, and easy, but with that streak of uniqueness that Jacqueline Carey always includes in her work. The narration is largely fine, but there is a significant problem in that the narrator's verbal voice for the main character, Daisy, too often sounds like Daisy's mental voice, so it's sometimes confusing as to whether or not Daisy is speaking or thinking. Still, I do recommend the novel, but I recommend it more in written form than audio.

Good Story, less good narration

This is a fun small town modern fantasy. If you like the Mystic Bayou series by Molly Harper, you’ll probably enjoy this. There are a few words strangely enough to merit comment, but otherwise it’s well read.

Lighter weight than some of her other books but with the same solid character development
