About this listen

Ten years after graduating from Harvard, lawyer Jack Collins sets out to reinvent himself. The Ivy-leaguer leaves a small Connecticut law practice to join one of the nation’s most prestigious firms, trading a nondescript office for one in a gleaming New York City skyscraper. He surrounds himself with people far more glamorous than those he’s left behind. He basks in the pride of being with his famous new boss, his alluring new coworker, and his fascinating new client, Abigail Walker, wealthy widow of a US senator.

Jack thinks he is on the path to glory. He couldn’t be more wrong.

In reality, Jack is a victim of deceit - a pawn in a game he doesn’t even know he’s playing. His new boss harbors deep secrets. His seductive coworker is not the person he thinks she is. And his new law firm is at the very center of a blackmail plot involving the widow Walker. Oblivious to countless warning signs, Jack doesn’t appreciate the danger around him - until he is literally running for his life.

Outstanding drama

I absolutely loved this legal thriller. It has me until the very end. I wish the brilliant author would write another intense novel like this one was
Very well narrated.

It took forever getting to the point, and I finall

There are so many good reads based on a legal office, but this wasn't one. The author would be well advised to throw a bone every once in a while to the reader and let tham in on the secrets going on here. Too bad.

Just what I was looking for!

I have not read a legal thriller in a while, but I was looking for something a little different from my non-fiction deep dives. This was just what the doctored ordered!

Twists and turns

The title of this book offers only the beginning of the mystery and intrigue of its story. Cooper craftily dribbles out clues, with the occasional red herring, leaving even the most careful reader, or listener, to be caught looking one way when he surprises us with the true direction of the plot.

Cooper adds well-crafted satire along the way. You don’t need to know much about the professions and places that are prominent in the book to find yourself smiling at Cooper’s wit. That being the case, I liken the author to a modern era Agatha Christie as well as John Grisham.

The narrator was fantastic. Even if I put the book down for a day or two, I immediately recognize the characters by the voices he created for them. Audible listeners will appreciate this.
I recommend After the Fact and eagerly await the next book by Jeff Cooper.

Truthfully nothing

Should be one female and one male narrator. One unaltered voice is confusing. Very predictable story.
