Autism therapy typically focuses on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms such as difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant offers a new and compelling paradigm: The most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports.

Help for those who need the info
Finding help and getting a diagnosis as an adult with autism can be SO difficult, that is, if you don’t know where to look. However, Jason Jones lays down the foundational understandings for everything one could want to know about navigating the world through the lens of an adult with autism. I particularly love the stuff on sensory overload as this can be an area of extreme difficulty. I love how there are personal accounts of people that have autism so that the listener can relate, and as someone who has stimmed their whole life and shown a ton of autistic traits and not really known why, it is liberating and exciting even to know that I am not alone. The personal accounts really hit home in this area.

Very informative!
I'm currently looking into a job that will be caring for someone with autism and this was exactly the book i needed. I really liked the adult focus on it, aimed specifically to help those with autism on how to function in everyday life. It just helped me be a lot more understanding and sympathetic which was very much needed. So if you feel this might be you or know someone this might represent I highly recommend giving this book a listen. It will be a great guide no matter what.
