About this listen

It's promising to be a picture-purrfect Christmas at New England's favorite cat café...but instead of jolly old St. Nick, residents are being visited by murder. The fourth in a mystery series from author Cate Conte, A Whisker of a Doubt is filled with felines and crime.

The holiday season on Daybreak Island is a mixed bag for Maddie James. On the one hand, her Christmas spirit is in the doghouse after a break-up. On the other, she's busy enough that she doesn't have to pretend to be merry. Business at her cat café is booming, and Maddie's care-taking of a feral cat colony in one of the area's wealthiest communities only helps her bottom line.

But tensions between the homeowners and animal activists are escalating to catastrophic levels...and before long a body is found dead in a snowbank. To prove that her accused friend is innocent of the crime, Maddie will have to prowl the island for clues to the real killer before everyone on the island goes completely hiss-terical-and more than nine lives are lost.

What a great book and as usual unexpected ending

I really enjoyed this book from beggining to end. All the characters are real and their way of thinking is realistic. I smile every time the narrator makes her ugh sounds a person would make when not happy about something. Love how much info on feral cats is provided and that is accurate!!! love this book!!!

Hard to figure out.

The story is very good with several threads of mysteries . Each one curious. A lot of rescue information adds to the depth of this story

Obnoxious

This book was narrated like a middle school drop out performance, She whined her way through the book and I felt certain that I was at home listening to my 11 year old daughter drone on about her classmates. It is not entirely the narrators fault though! It is written like an 11 year old's story. The plot was ok, but the delivery made me regret wasting a credit!

Bratty Maddie is getting annoying

It was an okay story and kept me guessing as to whodunit. But in terms of the personal lives of our main characters, I'm frustrated and may need to stop listening to the series. Maddie is whiny and awful to so many people in this book, especially poor Craig, who is nothing but great to her. She is a drama queen whose maturity is more on the level of a 16 year old than a 20 or 30 something. I'm disappointed about the Lucas situation as well (especially how it ended up). I expected more and better of Maddie. Maddie just lacks any sort of emotional intelligence and I found myself wondering why we were following her and are supposed to care about her. It's not like these crimes aren't getting solved without her. I'm also frustrated that no one tells her anything (except the police, they have an actual good reason for not telling her stuff). In the last 2 books a lot of frustration could have been avoided if people, like her parents and grandfather, were just honest and open with her. They know her well enough to know that she won't stop being curious until she finds the truth, so why not just be honest with her? Argh... so frustrating!

It's hard to listen to a series with an unlikable main character/narrator. She wasn't always unlikable, but is becoming moreso with each book.
