A spy...

My name is Charlotte Locke, and I’m an analyst for Section 47, a secret government agency that tracks terrorists, criminals, and other paramortal bad guys who want to unleash their abilities on an unsuspecting mortal world. I have a magical form of synesthesia that senses danger and uncovers lies - making me a stealthy operative.

I’m trudging through another day when one of Section’s cleaners - assassins - takes an interest in me. I don’t need my synesthesia to realize that he is extremely dangerous and that he will do anything to achieve his goals - even if it means putting me in the line of fire.

...and an assassin

I’m Desmond Percy, one of Section 47’s most lethal cleaners. I’m also a man on a mission, and I need Charlotte Locke’s skills to help me keep a promise, settle a score, and kill some extremely bad people.

Charlotte might not like me, but we’re stuck together until my mission is over. Still, the more time we spend together, the more I’m drawn to her. But at Section 47, you never know who you can trust - or who might want you dead.

This book is just okay. There are some interesting parts especially where all the pieces are put together near the end. Sadly those interesting parts are few and far between.

The dialogue is stilted and poorly phrased in certain technical situations. The author obviously didn't do enough research into what happens leading up to, running and after running convert ops, and relied on trait dialogue that one would see in B rated tv.

The female narrator was decent and had a better Australian accent than the male narrator who was narrating the character who was supposed to have an Australian accent. The male narrator's accents leaves a lot to be desired and he kept slipping in and out of I badly executed Australian accent throughout his whole narration and it was distracting.

meh

I enjoy Jennifer's writing and the way she tells a story. Her characters are well developed and her women are always strong and capable.

Good story

I was really enjoying this book right up to the last three chapters. Two of those chapters are ONE sex scene, and the last chapter was an unnecessary and lame wrap up. I recommend this book, but I also recommend putting it down when the fucking starts. You will miss nothing.

Three chapters too many.

As others have said, w the female narrator was excellent, but the male narrator was a bit plodding and didn’t keep the accent all of the time. The story was interesting. I did guess one of the moles and some idea of the second and I rarely figure it out. That may make it too easy for others. I would like to find out what happens to one of the second art characters.

Liked story & female narrator

I really enjoyed this story. The female narrator had a heavy southern twang that kinda grows on you. The male narrator had a more stilted cadence to his voice but I enjoyed it anyway. Both narrators gave Dundee and Numbers an extra sense of personality I thought fit the characters well. The story itself was very entertaining. Spies, moles, terrorists, and paranormal superheros were all elements spicing up the story. The action scenes were thrilling. Definitely recommend this story. It would make a great movie.

Dundee and Numbers make a great team

Agree that the narration could be improved but I really liked the story and the slow burn between the characters. I think this could be a good series.

Enjoyed this beginning

Without yet talking about the plot, I wanted to mention the narrations. I loved the female narrator, who sounds like so many folks I listen to daily here in rural NC. The guy was simply so slow and deliberate, he plodded. I played the female at about 1.25-1.3--the guy needed more than 1.5, and I couldn't take the time to change in between--he just plodded. The plot was a normal fun thriller--some supernatural aspects, and, as one might expect from an experienced writer such as Estep, great pacing and plenty of action. Good character development, too.

I don't need a wonderful book to enjoy audio--but I do need a decent story and good narration. This book satisfied both of those, but next time either dump the guy or tell him to speed up.

Narration speed issues

I really enjoyed reading this book. Charlotte and Desmond were very well written, strengths and weaknesses for both were appropriately written. I really enjoyed that Charlotte was a strong woman who didn’t settle for a man to save her at every moment. A nice balance of Desmond saving her here and there and Charlotte stepping up and batting for herself. There were some slow moment in the book, but nothing too bad to lead me away from the story. I enjoyed the backgrounds of both characters and how they brought out the emotional aspects of the characters. Guessing who the mole was, wasn’t too difficult for me, but I’m also a writer so, there is that. The narrators for the characters were…I don’t know, at times I didn’t mind too much but Desmond’s narrator bugged me overall. The ending dragged for me but it tied things up nicely.

Good story

The man's voice was supposed to be accented. Unfortunately, the actor could not hold it and was al over the place. Plus, it was down right creepy when he read the female parts. The female reader was pleasant once I got used to her southern drawl (5*)but the man was a serious negative (1*,distracting, irritating).

liked story, hated male voice reader

Kind of like a piece of candy, don't look for depth or some incredible story. Just enjoy the ride.

Pop but enjoyable
