About this listen
“a splendid book… [le Carré] is a perfect spy novelist.” — The New York Times
The most autobiographical of John le Carré’s works, A Perfect Spy follows two narratives: the manhunt for the double agent Magnus Pym, and the makings of the man in question—told in his own words.
Referred to as le Carré’s best work and one of the best English novels of the 20th century by the likes of Philip Pullman and Philip Roth, this mesmerizing drama captures a man living more than one life, and the inevitable betrayals that result.

Story
In the late 1960s, in the town of Bonn, capital of West Germany, a British Embassy officer by the name of Leo Harting goes missing—and forty-three confidential-or-higher files with him. Dispatched from the British Foreign Office to investigate, Alan Turner arrives in Bonn to find riots, protests, and a tenuous balance of power. As if there isn’t enough pressure, the embassy’s head of Chancery, Rawley Bradfield, makes it clear he has no intentions of making Turner’s investigation an easy one.

Story
George Smiley has left the Circus. With the wreckage of the West’s spy war against the Soviets strewn across Europe, he has eyes only for a more peaceful life. And indeed, with his marriage more secure than ever, there is a rumor that George Smiley might almost be happy. But Control has other plans. A Russian agent has defected in the most unusual of circumstances, and the man he was sent to kill in London is nowhere to be found. Smiley reluctantly agrees to one last simple task: interview Szusanna, a Hungarian émigré and employee of the missing man, and sniff out a lead.

Story
From his years serving in British Intelligence during the Cold War, to a career as a writer that took him from war-torn Cambodia to Beirut on the cusp of the 1982 Israeli invasion to Russia before and after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, le Carré has always written from the heart of modern times. In this, his first memoir, le Carré is as funny as he is incisive, reading into the events he witnesses the same moral ambiguity with which he imbues his novels.

New spies with new loyalties, old spies with old ones; terror as the new mantra; decent people wanting to do good but caught in the moral maze; all the sound, rational reasons for doing the inhuman thing; the recognition that we cannot safely love or pity and remain good "patriots" -- this is the fabric of John le Carré's fiercely compelling and current novel A Most Wanted Man.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Meh…
I thought that the narration was substandard. So many mispronunciations and the rendering of German names was especially annoying. For example, “her” instead of “Herr” led to confusion.
The story was overly complicated. I know that the book is highly regarded but I’m afraid it was lost on me.

Great story, awesome narrator.
I love le Carre, and this is one of his finest works. The narrator is great. He can't do a great American accent, but even that adds to the buffoonish American characters in the book.

Low production value
Not an adequate voice actor for this story. Not just because the pronunciation of non-English words is abysmal. LeCarré might turn in his grave. Don’t they use proof readers and editors in professional audiobook productions?

19 hours of meandering dribble
I was excited to listen to this book since it was mentioned in a Jack Carr novel, but was severely disappointed.
The story could have been about a third as long as it is, but the author likes to list 5 things about any little useless detail and really stretches out the book. There is very little actual spy craft and the parts that do talk about espionage are very vague.
The story jumps around back an forth in time and it can be difficult to determine when we are and who is talking.
Lastly, the book is about 90% British slang, so unless you are familiar with the terminology you may get lost.
If you're looking for good spy fiction, look elsewhere
