About this listen
A Little Hero takes place during some summer days at a manor house outside of Moscow, where members of the Russian upper class enjoy themselves with lavish parties, scenic outings, and various carefree pursuits. The main character is an 11-year-old boy who becomes fascinated by and falls in love with the beautiful and melancholic Madame M, who is a grown-up, married woman.
Through the boy's clear sight we gain an insight into what is going on behind the polished surface of the manor and its guests, including the unequal balance between the sexes and the grown-ups' condescending and thoughtless behavior toward the children. In addition, the story contains some very rich depictions of landscape and the natural surroundings and is first and foremost a beautiful representation of a boy's first meeting with erotic love.
When Dostoyevsky was arrested in 1848 for revolutionary activity - because of his membership in the intellectual group the Petrashevsky Circle - he was sent to the well-defended Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg, which housed the most dangerous convicts. He spent eight months there while awaiting his sentence. After three months he was allowed a candle in his cell, and he immediately got to work on writing a story, which became A Little Hero. The lovely little tale forms a sharp contrast to the grim circumstances under which it was written.

Little Women is recognized as one of the best-loved classic children's stories, transcending the boundaries of time and age, making it as popular with adults as it is with young listeners. The beloved story of the March girls is a classic American feminist novel, reflecting the tension between cultural obligation and artistic and personal freedom.
But which of the four March sisters to love best? For every listener must have their favorite. Independent, tomboyish Jo; delicate, loving Beth; pretty, kind Meg; or precocious and beautiful Amy, the baby of the family?

Story
Tess Durbeyfield has become one of the most famous female protagonists in 19th-century British literature. Betrayed by the two men in her life - Alec D’Urberville, her seducer/rapist and father of her fated child; and Angel, her intellectual and pious husband - Tess takes justice, and her own destiny, into her delicate hands. In telling her desperate and passionate story, Hardy brings Tess to life with an extraordinary vividness that makes her live in the heart of the reader long after the novel is concluded.

In the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a young cavalry officer is invited to a dance at the home of a rich landowner. There - with a small act of attempted charity - he commits a simple faux pas. But from this seemingly insignificant blunder comes a tale of catastrophe arising from kindness and of honour poisoned by self-regard. Beware of Pity has all the intensity and the formidable sense of torment and of character of the very best of Zweig's work. Definitive translation by the award-winning Anthea Bell.

The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale ( The Night Circus). The warning was inscribed on the entrance of the hidden tomb, forgotten for millennia in the sands of mystic Egypt. Then the archaeologists and grave robbers came in search of the fabled Jewel of Seven Stars, which they found clutched in the hand of the mummy. Few heeded the ancient warning, until all who came in contact with the Jewel began to die in a mysterious and violent way, with the marks of a strangler around their neck.

Fine reading
The reader beautifully renders the spirit of this joyful tale. Unusually sweet for Dostoevsky but with some of his trademark psychology. The reader should do The Insulted and Humiliated.
