About this listen

On March 16, 1992, Elizabeth DeCaro, a 28 year-old mother of four, was found dead in her own home, murdered execution-style with two bullets to the head. Her husband, Rick, was immediately a suspect, having previously struck her "accidentally" with the family van after taking out a $100,000 life insurance policy on her. A Killer Among Us presents the true shocking story of Elizabeth's family and their search for justice against the man who continued to play father to the children whose mother he had killed.

This real-life case has fascinating legal elements - three trials, a death penalty conviction, and a dramatic reversal in federal court - and has received extensive local and national coverage.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would. This is a true crime story. It's a long book to listen to but well worth it.

What did you like best about this story?

Justice finally prevailed.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favorite?

I didn't really have a favorite.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When they found Rick not guilty at his state trial. I was very angered, also at all the abusive things his kids had to endure at his hands.

Any additional comments?

Heart wrenching story

Someone wrote a review that they could "listen to Kevin Pierce read a grocery list," and I couldn't agree more.

The story was a bit one-sided though, and unfortunately I was 100% convinced that the final verdict was correct. I'd like to read an account from the Decaro side just to balance out the story a bit. Otherwise, it was compelling and a great read.

Kevin Pierce is the best

Any additional comments?

A good book. kept me involved right to the end. Nicely written - as for the narration, well .. . Kevin Pierce could keep me intrigued reading the dollar meal menu at McDonalds!!

A Really Good Read

Long and extremely slow. Kevin Pierce did an amazing job as usual. I have listen to over 50 audibles , and finally came to the conclusion that any audible over 10 hrs is a waste

Repetitive

I actually didn't realize this was a true story until I was about 5 hours in. Keeps your attention with great details, but flows like a novel. Any Dateline fan would like this one!

It's like a 15 hour Dateline!

I thought this story of true crime was such a page turner. The narrator's reading of this tragedy was easy to listen to.

The relentless references to these people's ridiculous religious beliefs were damn near unbearable! All the while they were taking about how their god would deliver justice, it was impossible not to think of the irony in the fact that if the god they believed in were real, then that same magic sky fairy was the one that allowed their daughter, sister, mother, etc., to be killed in the first place. Then the part about the sister asking for a "sign" from her sister that would let her know that she was approving of her actions from the afterlife, and then sure enough... the sign that she was so desperately looking for just happened to present itself in a completely mundane & common occurrence way was just too much to take. Just ridiculous!
It's so so embarrassing that we still live in a world where the topic of gods, devils, psychics, spirits, etc., are still talked about as if they are real!
Besides that, this was a decent book. Great narrator.

Drove me crazy

Very detailed but very well-written account of a sad case...well worth the time reading. or I should say, listening! This narration was so good too that I often nearly forgot about it, just interested and listening to the story...excellent!

Complicated true story

Fascinating from beginning to end, very well written, great narration, and a close look at "pure evil". Rick DeCaro, an obvious psychopath, ruins countless lives to satisfy his selfish needs. Thankfully, the Van Isaghems banded together to obtain justice. Melanie was my hero~what a strong woman~she (and the entire family) refused to give up and spent four years fighting for Liz. The four children made me so sad. DeCaro certainly deserved his sentence!
