Acerca de esta escucha
This is a beautiful and unflinchingly honest record of how even a stalwart believer can lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can gradually regain his bearings.

Historia
C. S. Lewis's dazzling allegory about Heaven and Hell - and the chasm fixed between them - is one of his most brilliantly imaginative tales, where we discover that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon in Hell and embarks on an incredible voyage to Heaven. Anyone in Hell is invited on board, and anyone may remain in Heaven if he or she so chooses. But do we really want to live in Heaven?

Lewis offers answers to these crucial questions and shares his hope and wisdom to help heal a world hungering for a true understanding of human nature.

Historia
Both astonishing and prophetic, The Abolition of Man remains one of C. S. Lewis's most controversial works. Lewis sets out to persuade his audience of the ongoing importance and relevance of universal objective values, such as courage and honor, and the foundational necessity of natural law. He also makes a cogent case that a retreat from these pillars of our educational system, even if in the name of "scientism", would be catastrophic. National Review lists it as number seven on their "100 Best Nonfiction Books of the 20th Century".

Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

Historia
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written.

In the form of warm, relaxed letters to a close friend, C. S. Lewis meditates on many puzzling questions concerning the intimate dialogue between man and God. He considers practical and metaphysical aspects of prayer, such as when we pray and where. He questions why we seek to inform God in our prayers if he is omniscient, whether there is an ideal form of prayer, and which of our many selves we show to God while praying.

Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908) was the greatest writer ever to come from Brazil and one of the masters of nineteenth-century fiction. Susan Sontag calls him "the greatest writer ever produced in Latin America", surpassing even Borges. Harold Bloom says that Machado is "the supreme black literary artist to date". And Allen Ginsburg calls him "another Kafka". And The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas is his masterpiece, a dazzling, tragic, and profound novel that belongs next to the greatest works of his contemporaries Melville and Dostoevsky.

This remarkable memoir is the classic account of the transgender journey. It is all the more extraordinary because it is the life story of a figure who, it seemed, seamlessly and publicly charted a course through the English establishment - James Morris, outstanding journalist, historian and travel writer, famed for a peerless writing style. But all the while he was concealing a very different inner world: from the age of four he felt that, despite his body, he was really a girl.

Assembled from notes and jottings left unpublished at the time of the author’s death, The Book of Disquiet is a collection of aphoristic prose-poetry musings on dreams, solitude, time and memory. Credited to Pessoa’s alter ego, Bernardo Soares, who chronicles his contemplations in this so-called "factless" autobiography, the work is a journey of one man’s soul and, by extension, of all human souls that allow their minds and hearts to roam far and free.

This work contains his concise, genuine reflections on that period: "Nothing will shake a man - or at any rate a man like me - out of his merely verbal thinking and his merely notional beliefs. He has to be knocked silly before he comes to his senses. Only torture will bring out the truth. Only under torture does he discover it himself."

In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon in Hell and embarks on an incredible voyage to Heaven. Anyone in Hell is invited on board, and anyone may remain in Heaven if he or she so chooses. But do we really want to live in Heaven?

Both astonishing and prophetic, The Abolition of Man remains one of C. S. Lewis's most controversial works. Lewis sets out to persuade his audience of the ongoing importance and relevance of universal objective values, such as courage and honor, and the foundational necessity of natural law. He also makes a cogent case that a retreat from these pillars of our educational system, even if in the name of "scientism", would be catastrophic. National Review lists it as number seven on their "100 Best Nonfiction Books of the 20th Century".

No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear
“No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear…” Have you lost someone you love recently? Have you struggled to process the feelings and thoughts that come with loss? Me too. Lewis too. This short book records his thoughts and railings during his grief caused by the death of his wife. As a parent, some of the most comforting moments I have had are to see other parents struggling like I do and in that moment to realize that I am not alone. As a griever, it is powerful to know that you are not alone in those feelings. Lewis journals his thoughts, and feelings as he works through the healing process. In the end, only time has the power to start to heal the hurt.
I recommend this to the grievers, and those supporting them.

"Jack" takes the stage as CS Lewis falls to pieces
Where does A Grief Observed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of my favorite books in CS Lewis's many publications (well above the Chronicles of Narnia) and for that reason a "must have" for a fan's audiobook library.
What did you like best about this story?
A Grief Observed is the book I assign to students to contrast the persona CS Lewis puts forth in his other books (a witty but erudite, at times elitist, academic). Suddenly the effects of fame and polish of education fall away from Lewis, leaving behind a nonetheless brilliant, sensitive, and humble man his intimates knew as "Jack."
Which scene was your favorite?
For students of gender, the passage where Lewis considers how his wife was for him not only in diverse ways, a mother, a daughter, a sister, and a wife but also a host of other masculine identities shows a clear break from a more authoritarian and demarcated binary for gender that Lewis establishes in some of his other works.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The whole book will at once inspire and break readers down as they spend time with a sincere, uncertain, and grieving man.

A Brutally Honest Experience with Loss
This is not the familiar intellectual C.S. Lewis that is expressed in his other works. Rather, this is Lewis at his lowest and at a time when academic truths seem to be at odds with the pain of reality. In loss he states what he truly feels but most dare not speak and examines himself in what he believes to be his naked form. It is a beautiful book about the reality of grief and loss with a great performance that brings the tone that is needed.

The sheer intelligence of Mr. C.S. Lewis
I, too, have known grief of loss. The loss of both parents, 2/3 of my siblings and a spouse and I found myself astounded by Mr. Lewis’ explanation of experiencing grief. It was almost as if his intellect was detached and observing his physical grief from a distant corner of the room. Perhaps this how great minds operate.

So Beautiful!
I know I've read this before, but it means much more after someone you love dies. I totally get the rant-----as if I could fall in love with a memory; I don't want the memory, I want H----C.S. Lewis said something to that effect and now I completely understand what he meant. And then the image of her at the end and the road to healing---the book was fantastic. It's all so beautiful, he says it so well, and I am very grateful that someone like C.S. Lewis lived and wrote such beautiful, profound things.
