About this listen

In this inspiring and provocative memoir about a young Black man, Caylin Moore tells the against-all-odds story of his rise from racial injustice and cruel poverty in gang-ridden Los Angeles to academic success at the University of Oxford, with hope as his compass.

A Dream Too Big is for listeners who want to....

  • Enjoy a compelling, true, hard-to-believe inspirational story.
  • See firsthand how God can redeem even the most painful life experiences.
  • Be inspired and find hope in knowing that, despite their own circumstances, through hard work and the grace of God, there is hope.

When Caylin Louis Moore was a young child, his mother gathered her three young children and fled an abusive husband, landing in poverty in a heavily policed, gang-ridden community.

When Moore’s father was convicted of murder and his mother was sexually assaulted in the hospital while recovering from open-heart surgery, Moore was forced to enter adulthood prematurely. His hope was fueled by embracing his mother's steely faith in God and in education. Moore skirted the gangs, the police, and the violence endemic to Compton to excel as a student-athlete, eventually reaching the pinnacles of academic achievement as a Rhodes Scholar. Moore's eye-opening, against-all-odds story reveals that there is no such thing as a dream too big.

A story of valor, courage and determination

As a TCU graduate, I became familiar with Kaylin Moore when he was a young student, playing football. He is among the many beloved student athletes to ever attend TCU. His scholarship is an essential point to the nature of his character and endurance. Few people have managed to substitute pushups for hunger and get homework done while growing up with a determined mother.

Heartwarming, and inspiring.

The best line to me was when the mom mentioned, and I'm paraphrasing, "if they write your story they will make you look like a victim if you tell your story you are a victor." I wish all who have suffered can rise above the angry, pain, or humiliation so their lives can go on to be fruitful in any way possible.

Inspiring Story

This is an inspuring & uplifting story of not allowing life from stopping a person from acheiving their dreams. Caylin Moore is someone we all could learn from. Only downfall is the narration isn't the best so buy the book instead.

Truly inspiring.

This story is moving, tragic, triumphant and even a bit funny. I am an atheist but the authors journey is the best argument for the value of faith that I have ever heard.

A must listen and/or read!

This story is a wonderful one of a warrior who does battle not with fighting but with love (for people, for learning) and as a result self-actualizes beyond what is normally possible for someone with the typical constraints that hold people down (e.g., systemic racism, economic inequality, lack of opportunity). This is a story of hope…of what is possible if one dares to dream big dreams!

The pressure of creating a headline

I chose this reading from his interview he gave on Good Morning America. I’m so glad I put it on my wish list that day. Listening to his life, I felt several emotions ranging from sadness of the situations of poverty, violence, and his dream of the NFL not coming to true, mad about how some people view themselves as better than others and their treatment, hope that out of dire circumstances, good can still happen that God is the truth and the way. Also, concern for our country and the divisions that are getting bigger, but also joy that Caylin rose above and excelled and proud that someone like him exists in our world. Caylin wants to make this world a better place, something that I wish we all could strive for. So happy he found a love with a parallel view of life.

Everyone should read this book. It touches so many communities and areas of life where we can each make an impact and how we can turn this sinking boat around.

I wish he could’ve included the poem about the rose, but maybe, legally could not have.

Thank you for this book. I will try every day to make this world around me a better place.

A must read

This young man came to meet my students and showed them what inspiration looks like. I had high hopes for this book and was not disappointed. He shows the struggle going on in our country with a poignancy that leaves the reader charged to make his story heard. Pray for a change yes, but God calls us to work to be that change. Caylin is that change. Remembering where he came from and showing that hope is above all else, the one thing we can not live without.

An important read now and always about depths of overcoming a predetermined life.

Hearing Caylin narrate his story made the experience more personal as he delivered the facts of his life’s journey with gratitude and continuous hope through the most difficult challenges. With faith and perseverance he conquered the system which is determined to fail him. Thankfully there were a few positive voices like his amazing mother and a few examples of success to fuel his hunger along the way. Caylin and his story is a gift that we should not take for granted. Pass this along to your children and grandchildren in hopes to open their world view.
