Acerca de esta escucha
"If John Irving ever wrote a horror novel, it would be something like this. I loved it." (Stephen King)
Noah Turner sees monsters.
His father saw them - and built a shrine to them with The Wandering Dark, an immersive horror experience that the whole family operates.
His practical mother has caught glimpses of terrors but refuses to believe - too focused on keeping the family from falling apart.
And his eldest sister, the dramatic and vulnerable Sydney, won't admit to seeing anything but the beckoning glow of the spotlight...until it swallows her up.
Noah Turner sees monsters. But, unlike his family, Noah chooses to let them in....

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

The facility is located in a medieval mountaintop castle surrounded by forests, on a site that is well known for concealing dark secrets going back many centuries. Viktor intends to use a new medical technique to prove that these patients share a common archetype of evil, a phenomenon he calls The Devil Aspect.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

Historia
Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

It's not safe for anyone alone in the woods. There are predators that come out at night: critters and coyotes, snakes and wolves. But the woman in the red jacket has no choice. Not since the Crisis came, decimated the population, and sent those who survived fleeing into quarantine camps that serve as breeding grounds for death, destruction, and disease. She is just a woman trying not to get killed in a world that doesn't look anything like the one she grew up in, the one that was perfectly sane and normal and boring until three months ago.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Reseñas de la Crítica
“Shaun Hamill’s A Cosmology of Monsters brilliantly combines the mythos of H.P. Lovecraft with a contemporary story of a family under threat of destruction from supernatural forces. It succeeds because these are good, likeable people that we root for; they could be our neighbors. Horror only works when we care for the people involved, and because we care for the Turners, their nightmare becomes ours. Hamill’s prose is simple, and simply beautiful. If John Irving ever wrote a horror novel, it would be something like this. I loved it, and think you will, too.” (Stephen King)
“A monster stalks a family across generations; a hidden city beckons from beyond perception; trauma and human frailty and loss bear their terrible fangs. . . . A Cosmology of Monsters is as weird and compelling and ambitious a horror novel as you could possibly want.” (Carmen Maria Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties)
“Sometimes you read a book and you know it’s special. A Cosmology of Monsters by Shaun Hamill is just such a book. It’s a book about family, love, loss, obsession . . . and monsters. Unique and wonderful. You won’t read anything like it this year.” (C. J. Tudor, author of The Chalk Man and The Hiding Place)
“Exquisitely written, A Cosmology of Monsters is both beautiful and haunting. Shaun Hamill has crafted the best sort of horror story: one full of love and dread that will have you rethinking your definition of what a monster is.” (Jennifer McMahon, New York Times best-selling author of The Winter People and The Invited)
"A Cosmology of Monsters by Shaun Hamill is beautiful, heartbreaking, offbeat horror. A terrific debut." (Ellen Datlow, editor of The Best Horror of the Year)
"Told with tenderness and brimming with darkness, Hamill’s debut is sure to please readers who have a special literary craving for monsters." (Bradley Sides, The Millions)
"[A] very scary coming-of-age tale that lives in the same space as Stranger Things, Stand by Me, and Stephen King’s It.... The way Hamill weaves his way between the phantasmagorical elements and Noah’s everyday dramas is nimble in a way reminiscent of King.... An accomplished, macabre horror saga and a promising debut from an imaginative new author." (Kirkus Reviews)

It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

On April 27, 1997, four contestants make it to the final cell of the Quigley House, a full-contact haunted escape room in Lincoln, Nebraska, made famous for its monstrosities, booby-traps, and ghoulishly costumed actors. If the group can endure these horrors without shouting the safe word, “reprieve,” they’ll win a substantial cash prize - a startling feat accomplished only by one other group in the house’s long history. In an idyllic Los Angeles neighborhood, where generations enjoy deep roots in old homes, the O’Rourke family fits right in. Miriam and Craig are both artists and their four children carry on the legacy. When their teenage son, Nick, is diagnosed with schizophrenia, a tumultuous decade ensues in which the family careens off the conventional course. Like the 10 Biblical plagues, they are hit by one catastrophe after another: violence, evictions, arrests, a suicide attempt, a near-drowning - even cancer and a brain tumor - play against the backdrop of a wild teenage bacchanal.

Does NOT feel like H. P. Lovecraft Mythos!
The only "Lovecraftian mythos" in this story is one of the premises which just seems to be "very lightly inspired by HPL" and then there's all the Lovecraft name dropping.
I have never been about to put a book down, as many times as I have with this one. Every time because it was soo dragging and boring. But every time I gave it one more chance because it seemed that now it would get a bit exciting and Sean Patrick Hopkins has a good reading voice, but alas it would only get exciting for a very short while and then back to the boring.
First around part four (of seven) did it seem to finally begin the real excitement but then it turned around and got back to boring and by then I was over half way through so I decided to see it through and boy did it feel like a chore.
As others have written there is "music" and it can be a bit offputting, but no where near as offputting as the sheer boredom of the book. Actually it was nice to get a break from the monotony of the story and it gave a feeling of "hey, now something exciting is about to happen... but no..."
Sean Patrick Hopkins Did a very good job with the material he was given and did his to keep me listening.
This is deffinitely one I'm returning for my credit!

Welcome to the Dead Dad Club
This was a nice switch up for me since I usually sit in the thriller/mystery genre, but I would classify this as more fantasy/sci fi. This was engaging and the narrator was so good! I feel like sections of this would have been better served in a video format just because I’d find myself lost for a beat. This would be a great read for someone who enjoyed YA mysteries and cryptozoology! Would definitely read more from Shaun Hamill! As the title states, though, the Dead Dad Club is a big part of this story, and there are definitely some triggers. Look them up before reading for sure!

not my usual read
with saying that I genuinely enjoyed this book, got a little weird at parts for me.. but I loved the storyline. You really felt like you knew each character, easy to follow. Even though the author will at points tell a story from the past. I look forward to sharing this book with others to enjoy as much as I did.

gonna get you!
Monsters were these fantastical beasts... then they were humans with disguises (thanks Scooby-Doo and psychologists), then they were preternatural sex symbols, then they were metaphors for 'queer' people! But they're finally back to being fantastical beasts!
Great story, well-sequenced events, fully-developed characters, and while the monster remains a scary entity, it's the villains who get their just deserts! Ya, and some innocents were hurt in the process, but that's life!
I'm an insta-fan; bravo!

Wild Ride, Endless Surprises, Creepy but digestible. Really good book!
I think the book was written really well such that there’s a lot of twists and turns, and some of it can be really creepy almost scary, but it doesn’t make you want to stop reading it makes you wanna know more. Really great concept of making a “haunted” family story that goes beyond the family.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who’s looking for something that’s a little bit less conventional in its entertainment.

We are all the Turner Family.
A Cosmology of Monsters is a novel like no other. The story bends the rules of what horror and dark fiction are supposed to be and it pays off. Hamill leads us on an exploration of the terror, loss, longing, happiness, and love that we face everyday all while paying respect to the genre and those who came before him.
Hopkins' performance is top notch. Distinctive characters and excellent tone lend a perfect pairing to the story.
